The Washington Post · Justice Department to be questioned in court on NYC Mayor Eric Adams caseBy Shayna Jacobs

"In all, there were six #resignations, including Sassoon’s. This is twice the number of people who were sacked when President #Nixon ordered the firing of special prosecutor Archibald Cox, who was investigating #Watergate...

The multiple resignations, especially by respected Department leaders in both New York and D.C., are reverberating across the nation, in the halls of #Congress and in our #courts."

Fri morning, #EmilBove, acting dpty AG, stepped up pressure. After Thur’s #resignations, Bove held a meeting w/the entire #PublicIntegrity section, ~24 lawyers, looking for anyone to sign a court doc seeking dismissal of the #EricAdams charges. Resignations &/or firings hang over every conversation.

Bove ordered the case be dropped on Mon. The fact that it’s now Friday afternoon & no federal prosecutor has yet complied is a sign of remarkable upheaval at the #DOJ.

“Some will view the mistake you are committing here in the light of their generally negative views of the new administration. I do not share those views. I can even understand how a chief executive whose background is in business & politics might see the contemplated dismissal-with-leverage as a good, if distasteful, deal.” But any such arrangement would be contrary to the #law, #HaganScotten wrote.

Order to Drop #EricAdams Case Prompts #Resignations in New York and Washington

The resignations represent the most high-profile public #resistance so far to President #Trump’s tightening control over the #DOJ. They were a stunning repudiation of the administration’s attempt to force the dismissal of the charges against Mr. Adams.

Publisher’s cost cutting, including the botched use of AI, pushes editors of top journal to resign

Walled Culture has noted previously the fabulous levels of profit that many academic publishers have achieved, largely through the abuse of copyright, as explained in Walled Culture the book (free digital versions). And yet those levels are apparently not enough for perhaps the most successful of the academic publishers, Elsevier. A story on the site Retraction Watch reports on the mass […]

The editorial board of the 52-yr old _Journal of Human Evolution_ just resigned to protest #Elsevier's interference with editorial practices, reducing journal quality, and insistence on a high #APC ($3990), reducing its affordability to authors in the field. "We all care deeply about the journal, our discipline, and our academic community; however, we find we can no longer work with Elsevier in good conscience."

There's no sign yet that the editors will launch a new #OpenAccess journal somewhere else. So I've not yet added it to the #OAD list of journal #DeclarationsOfIndependence
