The Love Letter, Johannes Vermeer, c. 1669 - c. 1670
Vermeer chose an unusual vantage point for this painting. From a dim space in the foreground, a glimpse is afforded of another room with a domestic scene. An elegantly dressed woman looks up expectantly at a maidservant, who has just handed her a letter. The seascape on the wall behind them may well allude to the epistle’s subject: during the 17th century, the sea was often compared to love, and the lover to a ship.

Musical Company, Rembrandt van Rijn, 1626
The subject of this painting is a mystery: is it an exhortation to praise God through singing and string music, or a scene of seduction with the old woman as a procuress? In any case, in this early work Rembrandt used elements from his own surroundings: his mother modelled for the old woman, and Rembrandt’s own features can be recognized in the young man.

Portrait of Jan Valckenburgh and an Enslaved Servant, Daniel Vertangen, c. 1660
Jan Valckenburgh, married to Dina Lems (opposite), twice served as director-general of Elmina (in present-day Ghana), seen here in the distance. The young man standing behind him is one of the numerous individuals brought to Elmina by African traders in order to be sold to the Dutch. At Fort Elmina, this human trafficking was organized and coordinated by the Dutch West India Company (WIC). In total, the Dutch transported 550,000 Africans to the Americas and the Caribbean.

#Mastodon has a lot of posts and conversations containing knowledge in different views, and I really appreciate that. This is something we often high light about the #Fediverse and I agree it's great.

But what I miss at times, is people posting #random stuff. Stuff that happened on their days, stuff they just thought off. Non-impacting hobby stuff. Superficial stuff. Sometimes those things are nice.

After all, not éverything has to be deep or meaningful.

Portraits of Sir Thomas Gresham and Anne Fernely, Anthonis Mor, c. 1560 - c. 1565
Sir Thomas Gresham (1519–1579) was the leading English merchant in Antwerp and also the English king’s financial agent in the Low Countries. He and his wife, Anne Fernely, are expensively, yet soberly dressed. Their status is also evident in their choice of painter: Anthonis Mor was one of the pre-eminent portraitists of his day and court painter to the Spanish king

Two Salt Cellars, Johannes Lutma (1584-1669), 1639
These salt cellars showcase the artistic influences Johannes Lutma absorbed while in Rome in 1630. Already in Roman antiquity, children were a favourite motif in sculpture, new variants of which sculptors developed in Lutma’s time. Lutma, too, created his own version, incorporating it into his salt cellars. The figure of the child follows the classical idiom, skilfully combined with fanciful auricular ornaments adorning the pedestal and bowl.
