I recall being told, not so long ago at a local party branch meeting, that if we (the local branch) thought we would be represented by a candidate of our choice, we were fooling ourselves. And this was from an elected candidate (whom I respect for their honesty).

It was a rude awakening for someone who believed in political action to have that democratic right taken away. Yes, I’m still a Labor Party member, because there is opposition to this ‘captain’s call’ process within the party (mainly left wing and unions). And, though small, my support for this opposition adds to the strength of it (every voice counts).
