Youth crime is a <a href="https://aus.social/tags/SocialIssue" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SocialIssue</span></a> best addressed by socially responsible policies which have nothing to do with <a href="https://aus.social/tags/policing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>policing</span></a> or the <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Courts" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Courts</span></a> and criminal laws. </p><p>“"The vast majority of the children I deal with come with some kind of trauma, whether that is familial or family abuse, abuse while they have been in residential care, some kind of cognitive disorder or intellectual disability… developmental delays, some kind of disadvantage, trauma."</p><p>The Melbourne lawyer says while community understanding of family violence is growing, it doesn't always publicly appreciate the long-term impacts on children.” (Source: <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-05-31/australian-state-and-territories-are-grappling-with-youth-crime/105355282" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">abc.net.au/news/2025-05-31/aus</span><span class="invisible">tralian-state-and-territories-are-grappling-with-youth-crime/105355282</span></a>?</p><p>If less of our <a href="https://aus.social/tags/treasure" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>treasure</span></a> was systematically transfered to the upper percentile of the moneyed population, there wouldn’t be so many ‘social’ drivers to youth delinquencyand crime.</p><p><a href="https://aus.social/tags/poverty" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>poverty</span></a> and <a href="https://aus.social/tags/illiteracy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>illiteracy</span></a> (or lack of education) are Political Choices made by our govt. We can change that. We can make a real difference to the socially disadvantaged portion of our society. But only if we wish to do so -- at the ballot box. </p><p>Sure, we’ve all got it tough. But why should we think we’re any better off just looking after our own interest if we leave so many people out of our decision making. We’re just perpetuating the thieving and making it worse over time. If we do nothing to stop the rorting, our great grandchildren will be youth crime statistics no matter how well we’ve done for ourselves.
