Bobbing Boat<p>At some points along the UK's canals, the banks are reinforced by using wood piling.</p><p>The wood rots, and the ground meant to stay behind it flushes into the canal. At that point there's water on both sides of the rotting wood piling. This makes it unsuitable for boats to tie up.</p><p>Wooden banks probably have some benefits, but I'm unaware of them. Bobbing Boat<p>Still more ways to tie up a narrowboat?!</p><p>Yes indeed.</p><p>If the canal bank has a steel railing, you can simply clip onto it by using a mooring hook with a rope passed through it.</p><p>Once moored, passing boats can toss your boat around and jam the mooring hook behind the rail. In wrenching it free, you might drop the hook into the canal.
