Sim Barr<p>Passing</p><p>Just read this 1929 novel by American author Nella Larsen. The story centers on the reunion of two childhood friends + the discovery that one is 'passing' in a mixed race marriage. </p><p>Born in Chicago, Larsen was part of the Harlem Renaissance of the 20s + 30s. Mik<p><a href="https://chaos.social/tags/Passing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Passing</span></a> is survival.<br>Not all trans people want to blend into the normative male/female population, but sometimes we need to. Society is often enforcing norms of gender appearance and expression. To appear trustworthy, competent and acceptable, we sometimes have to go through great lengths. Imagine applying for a job, standing in court or walking through a hostile environment.<br>I'm proud of being queer, trans and non-binary. But I also want to learn passing, for survival in these situations.</p>
