Neil Brown<p>In case anyone wonders how my day is going, I've been completing a risk assessment for the <a href="https://mastodon.neilzone.co.uk/tags/OnlineSafetyAct" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OnlineSafetyAct</span></a> for a project's web-based community-sourced translation management tool.</p><p>Might some sneaky so-and-so be using it for foreign interference? Financial crime or fraud? Is there a chance it might be used for animal cruelty?</p><p>It's an open source translation management tool.</p><p>I'm glad that the UK is focussing on the real high risk stuff here.</p>

Neil Brown<p>I’m sceptical that, from an international law point of view, the UK has the power to impose obligations on US (and other) service providers simply because they have users in the UK.</p><p>Yet it would be somewhat unfortunate if the UK government prioritised watering down the <a href="https://mastodon.neilzone.co.uk/tags/OnlineSafetyAct" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OnlineSafetyAct</span></a> for providers in the USA - a form of tariff imposed by the UK on the USA - over supporting providers of small, non-harmful, services.</p>

Paul<p>Looks like Ofcom are already starting to issuing letters under the Online Safety Act, including to sites abroad like Kiwi Farms (don't search for them, suffice to say they are a forum with content that many people would find uncomfortable at best).
