1) & 2) The ever popular Poplar Hawkmoth (frequently seen)

3) Alder moth (new)

4) Minor agg (possibly Tawny Marbled - these are very tricky to tell apart and only a genital examination would say for sure - but I do not kill moths)

Overhead shot of large 5cm hawk moth. It is largely a warm grey with hints of olive green. It has a thick chunky abdomen which curls up at the end. Its forewings (overwing) extend down and back like aeroplane wings but are squared off at the bottomedge. Its hindwings (underwing) fan out horizontally from near its head and therefore sit forward of the back-swooping forewings. The arrangement of the wings gives the moth the impression of being rather square in shape. It has very visible thin yellow-orange veins. and two very thick creamy white antennae

Its wings are largely of a similar colour with a very distinctive arrow or dagger shape down the centre, the point of the arrow pointing away from the head. The arrow shape is surrounded by an edging of black which makes it stand out. There are two slightly pale discs, quite large, one on each wing, near the bottom.

A small 0.5cm moth on a finger. It is arrowhead shaped. it is a warm reddish-brown colour, almost brick-red with hints of ginger and dark brown veins. There is a very slightly paler band, like a hem, that the runs across the bottom of the wings. it has two stigmata on each wing, one above the other, one ovoid, one reniform.

I spotted this Virginian tiger moth (𝘚𝘱𝘪𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘢 𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢) clinging to the underside of a plantain leaf on one of the Wiley trails:

Sometimes, you just happen to miss one!

Packing away the moth box and found this little fella on the side of a shallow planter. It is a welcome to 2025 and my first sighting this year of:

TREBLE BROWN SPOT - a geometer (read: flat and butterfly-like).

Common round these parts in May-June

A small 1.5 cm wide flat moth, butterfly shaped. It is a pale cream colour with three distinctive brown spots close to the left and right wing edges. Above the spots, in each wing corner is a brown smudge and these are all separated from the central part of the wing by a wavy brown line. On the other side of that line, in the central cream section of wing, there are four tiny brown diamond dots, two on each wing. Finally, the wing edges are heavily fringed. The moth sits on a black, scratched plastic planter.

Tough night with the rain and breezy conditions. No hot night summer bangers to speak of yet. So just some returning favourites. 1 & 2 are similarly named, 1 & 3 are twig mimics and 4 just because it sums up the weather!

A narrow moth on a finger. It rolls its wings around its abdomen like a rolled leaf or snapped twig. It is a light silvery-straw colour with brown woody streaks and pitting. It resembles a small snapped twig

Overhead shot of 1cm moth on a finger. It is arrowhead shaped. It is dark brown with two silvery-straw flame flashes down the sides of its wings extending from its head to about 3/4 of the way down. It has two stigmata on each wing, both blue-grey edged in silvery white. One is orbital and below it is one that is reniform.

An old favourite. A large 2.5cm moth on a finger. It resembles a large snapped birch twig. It is silvery grey with black and brown lines, like birch bark. It has a flat buff coloured face and at the back of the wing there is a large buff patch that resembles the inside wood of a twig as if it has been snapped from the tree.

A flat 1.5cm moth on a wall. It is butterfly shaped. It is white with a dull but very dark non-uniform band that resemble cloud shapes, which, apart from being broken in a couple of places, runs continuously around the edge of the wings. An almost magpie effect.

We happened upon this unusual cecropia moth caterpillar in Rouge Park. The circle of life for this moth takes about one year. Weather not been great for mothing recently. Took a punt last night after the heavy rain and whilst not numerically or diversity significant, I did attract a very handsome EYED HAWK MOTH. He wouldn't readily show me eyes on the underwing, until he was flapping for take-off (hence a bit of blur in photo 2)

A very large 5cm aeroplane shaped moth on a finger. Its wings angle sharply back diagonally from its head and upper abdomen giving it an aeroplane or wide arrowhead appearance. Its wings start narrow and then widen into an angular square towards the end. They are a warm grey with chocolate brown smudges. Its abdomen is very chunky and is more chocolate brown. The background is blurred foliage.

The same moth described in the previous picture. This time it rests on a finger on an upturned palm. Its wing ends are blurred because it is flapping ready to take-off. The difference with this picture is that it is partially revealing its underwings which partially show a bullseye patter on each underwing. The eyes have a navy blue centre edged in a bright blue , and then edged again in black. Hence its name, eyed hawk moth.

1) White Point
2) The Uncertain (that's its name; it's not my incertitude)
3) Peppered Moth
4) Willow Beauty (a bit misnamed, in my view)

We went camping in Nagatoro last weekend and saw a cool moth.

I didn't see the first part, but my partner said it was crawling along the ground as a "weird monster", then climbed up onto our bundle of firewood to begin unfurling its wings.

The triangular patches on its wings were silvery and reflective depending on the angle.

A large moth perched on the side of a small bundle of firewood which is tied together with a blue plastic strap.

The moth is mostly brown, and slightly shiny like smooth brushed hair. Each wing has two triangular patches, one pointing backwards and one pointing forwards, which are bright and silvery.
