#minorities

Just saw an excellent convo about affirmations for #masculine people. I got happy. Then I got sad when I remembered what's happening in the USA. We're being dragged backward at an alarming rate. We're back to struggling merely to affirm that #women, #LGBTQIA+ people, ethnic/racial #minorities, people with #disabilities, etc. deserve the same rights as everyone else, and to be free from harassment and violence. "Advanced" things like how stereotypes about #men (and similar topics) support and entrench #patriarchy seem like almost luxuries at this point. I feel like I'm going to spend all my day-to-day social justice time explaining to people that trans and queer and #Black and #Native and #Hispanic and #autistic and female people are human for the next few years. Ugh.

#HotTake: Every #human should be entitled by international #law to free, unseizeable #ID documents in the form of a travel #passport to evidence their #identity and have #FreedomOfMovement as well as a chance to #flee.

Why?

From the article: "Essentially, all employees and job seekers, a total of approximately 153 million Americans, benefit from the protections the EEOC provides. The Equal Pay Act—a law requiring equal pay for equal work that the EEOC enforces—covers virtually all employers, while other laws enforced by the EEOC apply to all but the smallest employers. Whether they work in the private sector or for the government, practically all employees and those applying for jobs are protected by the EEOC against illegal employer actions" (Annotations removed for clarity)

Replied in thread

As the experience narrated in the above video demonstrates, #stalking, #harassment and other such behaviors, in which most perpatrators are straight cis white men and victims are social #minorities, the solution can only be collective. Such situation can't be handled by the sole victims. It is both immoral to let them face that alone and socially suicidal for everyone to let these behaviors spread without a strong response.

But acting as if there was no #harassment and/or no #stalking, doesn't make it magically go away. Quite the opposite. Showing dignity and strength of character often simply drives the agressor nuts and encourage him (it's often a man) to act more agressively and brazenly, so as to simply push the victime's tolerance boundaries to their breaking point. Doing nothing is only feeding a feeling of impunity that can cause huge and widespread social harm, especially among social #minorities.

#stalking is a global issue, which mostly affects women as well as other social #minorities, and about which we need a lot more #education for everyone. Far too often, it is not recognized as such, most notably by institutions which still struggle to understand both offline and online #harassment, as this kind of behavior is still blamed on victims who are requested to ignore it and "not feed the troll".
