For fun I do experimental literary projects. One of them is something I call a "Wikicloud," where I do detailed research on a specific subject (in this case, Germany in the second half of the Medieval period, in preparation for a vampire novel I'm writing this winter), then not only record all the pages I read for it, and assemble my notes, but use a #mindmap format to show the order I read the pages (center outward), and how each page links to the others. I talk about this a lot on Mastodon!

The full view of the "Wikicloud" mindmap experiment I've been making in the free app Obsidian, as it's looking at the end of October 2024 (but always expanding). It's essentially a giant canvas, and we're looking at a colored box that each represent one page at Wikipedia, all of them having something to do with southern Germany during the second half of the Medieval period (which I'm researching right now in preparation for writing a vampire novel this winter, based entirely on a round of the one-player roleplaying game "Thousand Year Old Vampire"). They're vaguely laid out in order of which page had a link to the next page, showing the directions outward I took after first starting the project earlier this year. Some of the boxes have photos (those are all basically the "cool or weird trivia" pages of this research), and you can even embed a clickable YouTube video in them, which is impressive for free software. When I'm done, I'll absolutely share this in a version other Obsidian users can open. KEY: If the URL can be seen, that's a page that hasn't been read yet. Pages with only the titles are ones that have been read and notated. Red: Major topic Yellow: Science, history, politicians, etc. Green: Arts, culture, society, etc. Orange: Catholicism Purple: Interesting trivia for giving my novel color Light blue: Subjects on the periphery that inform these times and this place, but probably don't need to be read themselves
