Windows 11 build 26100.3902 breaks the recovery environment

A new Windows Insider build has been released for Windows 11 build 26100.3902 under the knowledge base number KB5055627. It introduced some new features, such as seamless access to your connected phone right from your PC using the Phone Link feature. It also brought the controversial Microsoft Recall feature, which was infamous due to privacy concerns.

At the end of the changelogs from the official release announcement, there is only one known issue. Unfortunately, it’s a major issue revolving around the recovery environment, the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). The official blog says:

After installing this update, Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) may not work, and you may not be able to use the “Fix problems using Windows Update” option under Settings > Recovery. These issues will be fixed in another update soon.

WinRE is a separate environment from the full Windows installation that allows you to recover your computer from system failures using various tools, such as the command prompt and an option to restore your PC to an earlier point. As described earlier, you may not be able to use the “Fix problems using Windows Update” option, should your computer experience problems.

Microsoft has, however, promised that they’re going to fix the issues soon.

Als #Linux-Nutzer bin ich die schlechte Hardwareunterstützung von #MicrosoftWindows nicht gewöhnt😟

Gestern erfolglos versucht, einem Kollegen zu helfen einen älteren #Canon #Scanner zu installieren. Canon hat nur Treiber für Windows XP mit letztem Update lange vor dem Ende von XP. Aktuelles Windows kann nichts damit anfangen. Der Gerätemanager erkennt gerade so, dass da ein unbekanntes Gerät von Canon ist🤷‍♂️

Unter #Debian steckt man einfach an und los geht’s.

Have you been getting that message and wondering what it's about? Have you seen the update notification dot but then there's nothing new on the "Windows Update" screen? Yeah, you and possibly millions of other people.

I think this happens if you're running Windows 11 on a PC without TPM. Some computers are more than 4-5 years old and don't have this option, and some people choose not to switch on TPM because they don't want it used against them for DRM or other malfeatures at a BIOS/UEFI level.

I'm pretty confident that Windows would be an excellent OS like macOS or Linux if it damn moved on from supporting 20 decade old software and hardware altogether.

You can still find traces from Windows 3.11 in the OS, just for compatibility reasons.

Of course, now that the Bing team is in charge of Windows, I hope the OS burns to the ground so people move on to macOS and Linux.
