I am experimenting with MicroOS running btrfs and SELinux.
I have some storage i use for Minecraft server data for instance, on the partition i have a directory with readonly snapshots. The server will not boot properly, because it's running auto relabeling and cannot relabel the readonly stuff.
What's the correct way to handle this? I've tried mounting the partition in different locations, but it seems everything is targeted by the relabel
@cmccullough @centos @almalinux Try AlmaLinux. Stable, rock solid. Works like a charm.
(Or go immutable with #Fedora #CoreOS or #openSUSE #MicroOS)
I am not using Aeon (see https://youtu.be/zcGAJAdJFfo for the actual information), but another project, which I am the only maintainer (and most likely the only user), Moldavite (https://sr.ht/~mcepl/moldavite/), using #Sway instead of #Gnome.
(it is not as crazy as it looks, because like MicroOS I use packages from Tumbleweed)
I've been running openSUSE MicroOS as a container host on a Raspberry Pi 4 for about a week now, without any trouble.
Transactional Updates (snapshots) has been working flawlessly, nothing unusual in the logs, CPU and memory usage looks similar to other OS's on the same hardware.
Anything else I should consider before moving this server out of testing?
@paulk #Leap or #Tumbleweed – or something fancier like #MicroOS? I’m a long-time fan of #openSUSE myself, and particularly of stable Leap.
From last week's Linux Update newsletter: Koen Vervloesem shows you how to manage containers with MicroOS, Cockpit, and Podman

I had to refrain from calling "Bingo", because I had anticipated that question. But it is an obvious question that deserves an answer. I also had to stop myself from quoting Shakespeare ("There more things ...").
In my case it boils down to this:
1. I have been experimenting with using #NixOS on my laptop, where I do all of my (private) things. I also have home-manager on my work laptop.
I can almost do all of the things I can on my #openSUSE #Tumbleweed laptop. This includes packaging for openSUSE.
But I have not converted all of my 3 dozen different VMs, servers, raspis, NUCs and whatnot to NixOS. They will keep running a mixture of immutable (openSUSE #MicroOS, #Fedora #CoreOS, NixOS, ...) and non-immutable things (Debian, Proxmox, ...). And I would like to be able to manage them from whatever host I am currently working from. Hence I would like to have a working Ansible environment on my NixOS laptop to manage other machines with.
To my knowledge #opensuse is not yet available as images with rpm-ostree layer. Though I think this development and #bootc are big advantage for organisations who already work with containers. It is also an advantage for organisations that would require more than one image for different ministries/departments/user groups.
I have followed the development on #MicroOS and @kalpa . It was still beta last time I checked. It works differently.
Is there some simpler way to modify #grub2 so it takes the disk encryption keys from a USB stick during boot? I did it once on Arch, it was a pain to get the syntax right.
Got an #OpenSuse #MicroOS now with encrypted disk that's supposed to boot without screen attached, taking the luks2 keys from a USB stick that gets removed after boot finished.

Oops, I did it again. Another blog post, this time on lightweight container orchestration on SUSE Linux Micro https://suse.com/c/lightweight-container-orchestration-in-suse-linux-micro/ #suse #slmicro #slemicro #microos #podman #systemd #linux #containers

#MicroOS and #Tumbleweed users! #GRUB2 with Boot Loader Specification (BLS) is now available, offering dynamic boot entries and improved full-disk #encryption support. Dive into the details and boost your system’s security! #FDE #openSUSE https://news.opensuse.org/2024/10/08/grub2-bls/
Think I'm going to build a RPi 3 #Syncthing box tomorrow, just as a proof of concept for myself. I've got a spare SSD and a USB 2.0 caddy.
My OS options are actually pretty similar to the VIA Eden box (#NetBSD, #AlpineLinux, #Slackware, #Debian, #VoidLinux), but I can also add #FreeBSD to the mix. Even #microos.
FS on the SSD could be #ZFS or (on Linux) #btrfs, plus encryption.
If it works well, I'll think about upgrades - RAID1 (or equivalent), different machine with SATA or USB 3.0, etc.
Phew, I am pretty thankful for #aeondesktop based on #opensuse 's #microos and #tumbleweed .
A faulty update occured ( https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1228659 ). That wasn't great, but because it uses #btrfs #snapshots for the #immutable os, I just changed back to a working snapshot and had a working #linux system again.
At first it didn't want to boot into the last working snapshot. But I found out in the forums, that you have to press "F8" while booting (after the #uefi was ready).
Big thanks to @sysrich !
