Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"With the frequency of environmental disasters, political polarization, and infrastructure attacks increasing, the stability of networks we have traditionally relied upon is far from assured.</p><p>Yet even with the world as it is, developers are creating new communications networks that have the potential to help in unexpected situations we might find ourselves in. Not only are these technologies built to be useful and resilient, they are also empowering individuals by circumventing censorship and platform control— allowing a way for people to empower each other through sharing resources.</p><p>In that way, it can be seen as a technological inheritor of the hopefulness and experimentation—and yes, fun!—that was so present in the early internet. These technologies offer a promising path forward for building our way out of tech dystopia."</p><p><a href="https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2025/07/radio-hobbyists-rejoice-good-news-lora-mesh" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">eff.org/deeplinks/2025/07/radi</span><span class="invisible">o-hobbyists-rejoice-good-news-lora-mesh</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/MeshNetworking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MeshNetworking</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Decentralization" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Decentralization</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Encryption" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Encryption</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Lora" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Lora</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Meshtastic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Meshtastic</span></a></p>

fraggle<p>Originally developed for crisis response, the Cluster Duck Protocol turns off-the-shelf LoRa devices into a decentralized mesh network. Ducks relay messages from stranded users, bouncing data node to node until it reaches a working internet uplink. It requires no infrastructure, no central server, and no cell towers. Just firmware, radios, and ingenuity. Projects like Meshtastic now build on these ideas, proving that DIY radio networks still have a future in off-grid tech and modern phreaking.</p><p><a href="https://1.6.0.0.8.0.0.b.e.d.0.a.2.ip6.arpa/tags/lora" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LoRa</span></a> <a href="https://1.6.0.0.8.0.0.b.e.d.0.a.2.ip6.arpa/tags/meshnetworking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MeshNetworking</span></a> <a href="https://1.6.0.0.8.0.0.b.e.d.0.a.2.ip6.arpa/tags/clusterduck" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ClusterDuck</span></a> <a href="https://1.6.0.0.8.0.0.b.e.d.0.a.2.ip6.arpa/tags/meshtastic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Meshtastic</span></a> <a href="https://1.6.0.0.8.0.0.b.e.d.0.a.2.ip6.arpa/tags/offgridtech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OffGridTech</span></a> <a href="https://1.6.0.0.8.0.0.b.e.d.0.a.2.ip6.arpa/tags/radiohacking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RadioHacking</span></a> <a href="https://1.6.0.0.8.0.0.b.e.d.0.a.2.ip6.arpa/tags/decentralizedcomms" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DecentralizedComms</span></a></p>

With every enoki mesh device, the local parastructure – and thereby paracommons – grows and finds new mycelic parapractices to move fragile or meshi information in-between more-than-one and beyond normative networks.</p><p>This hands-on workshop introduces participants to mesh networks through the Meshtastic protocol, combining practical device exploration with a location-based LARP on the Tempelhofer Feld. The session begins with an introduction to the Meshtastic protocol, hardware, and other mesh systems. We then continue outdoors, using Meshtastic devices to navigate through an algae wetland and wasteland to our final destination. Participants will discover how mesh networks function in real-world scenarios while engaging through speculative gameplay. The event also introduces our Meshtastic device sharing and borrowing system. Participants are welcome to bring their own Meshtastic devices if available, though no prior knowledge is required.
