Sally Strange<p>Today I learned that an acre, today defined as 43,560 square feet, was originally a measure of the area a yoke of oxen could plow in one day. Wikipedia says that would be 8 oxen. Anyway, that's why an acre is not square, but was traditionally a rectangle: one chain (66 ft) by one furlong (660 ft).
