Someone whose posts aren’t quite public served as a reminder to me to point out there’s an EU fund specifically dedicated to helping people in coal and similar regions with the energy transition.

Of course it is also up to member states (who control much bigger budgets) and it isn’t just about extreme cases like coal mining, but skills in every industry

Interesting article on Shanxi, China’s coal belt province!

Their whole economy depends on coal, and people don’t know much about climate change.

Nevertheless:

“People are quite happy to move on, if they are provided with good training and strong support to help that transition go smoothly”

After all, coal mining in a coal economy isn’t that great, in reality…

Carbon Brief · Interview: What the people of China’s coal-rich Shanxi think about climate change - Carbon BriefShanxi province in northern China is the country’s largest coal producer, leaving its coal-reliant economy and workers particularly exposed to the nation’s pledge to transition away from fossil fuels.

Indigenous communities in Latin America are revolutionizing clean energy, replacing diesel generators with solar power in remote villages. This grassroots movement creates jobs, reduces pollution, and empowers local people to control their energy future. It’s a beautiful example of traditional knowledge and modern technology working together.

Two-thirds of global heating caused by richest 10%, study suggests…that means us (or at least me)

“if the whole world population had emitted as the top 10%, 1% or 0.1% had, the temperature increase would have been 2.9C, 6.7C or a completely unsurvivable 12.2C”

(1/6)⚠️ Carbon taxes deepen inequality. They put the cost of the climate crisis on consumers instead of transforming the system. But what is the alternative?

We need a just transition that tackles economic security and inequality at the heart of climate action. That means:
🌱 Decommodifying essentials & building the social and care economy
🏢 Expanding co-ops & post-capitalist enterprises
💰 Redirecting finance toward useful sectors and less in harmful enterprise
🔄 Industrial policy & public job guarantees towards sectors that create social and ecological wellbeing

How can we create an economy that meets social-ecological needs?commonsnetwork.org/2024/10/17/

💬 What’s your take? How do we push for socially just climate action?

🚨 Liberal green policies generate conservative backlash

In the Netherlands, the government’s ‘ecological transition’ plan follows a neoliberal agenda. Policies like ‘true pricing’ (e.g. carbon taxes) claim to tackle the climate crisis but shift the burden onto consumers, worsening inequality.

⚠️ Carbon taxes are regressive. Why should low-income households bear the cost of our economic systems?

A just transition must tackle economic insecurity & inequality alongside climate action. Social wellbeing and ecological objectives must go hand in hand.

💬 What do you think? What narratives should we build so they resonate with the majority of people who are living in precarious conditions?
