It was a soft, warm evening, perfect for that.</p><p>“My daughter. It was a swimming accident.”</p><p>“I’m sorry.” He paused. “I didn’t know you had a daughter.”</p><p>“I don’t talk about it. Maybe I’ll write a story about her someday, but right now, cute will do. Chino reminds me of her. Cute, quiet, shy, good kid. I miss her.”</p><p>“Where is she?”</p><p>“Cimetière du Lapin Vert. Being poor is hard.”</p><p>It would have been a lovely evening with a <strong>golden</strong> haze on the hills and quaint shops preparing to close if only it weren’t so hot. Instead, the sun beat down on her, more like molten <strong><a href="https://sakurajima.moe/tags/gold" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gold</span></a></strong> than a gilded evening greeting. Even the cobblestones radiated heat.</p><p>It had been a long day. The second-shift girl had gotten sick at the last minute, and customers looking for a shady place to sit and a cooling tea flooded the Fleur de Lapin café. Iced Lapin Glacé was popular, and there had been half a dozen orders for the less popular Concomelon de Lapin. But none of her friends had visited.</p><p>She was worn out and depressed. If she were Cocoa or Chino, everyone would have dropped by without fail. Not even her best friend Chiya had come by.</p><p>She was rounding the last corner home when she glimpsed Rize darting from behind a hedge. “Oh, it’s a surprise party,” she thought, cheering up. She wouldn’t let Rize know she’d spotted him. Letting them think they’d surprised her was more important. Why had she doubted them?</p><p>A smile touched her lips, a genuine one, not her usual customer-service smile. </p><p>She paused at the threshold, breath held. She’d expected a surprise, but not like this. <strong>Golden</strong> blooms lay gathered at her feet: <strong>goldenrod</strong>, <strong>goldsturm</strong>, hawkweed, and dandelions, bright as summer laughter.</p><p>“How wonderful!” She began gathering an armful of blooms to put in a vase when her smile froze. Wild Geese, her self-invited bunny housemate, had come around the corner, a <strong><a href="https://sakurajima.moe/tags/plant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>plant</span></a></strong> in its mouth and a mischievous twinkle in its eye. Syaro’s eyes fastened on the <strong>golden</strong> yellow blossom of the tansy.</p><p>“At least Wild Geese remembered,” she said. Bitter and unhappy, she took her wildflower bouquet into the house.</p><p> Sunflowers<br> Glorious Sunflowers</p><p>Along the wall, hanging from the ceiling, in bunches or singly, the room smiled at her.</p><p>On the table stood a yellow cake, its thick whipped frosting as soft and light as a pale yellow peony, with the words “Happy Birthday!!!” in marigold letters.</p><p>All her friends began singing to the blushing Syaro. </p><p> Happy birthday to you.<br> Happy birthday to you.</p><p>Then, Syaro nearly fainted as Rize presented her with a bunch of yellow roses. “Rize...” she thought, “roses.” Her mind drifted like buttercups on a stream.
