Bích-Mây Nguyễn :verified:<p>"Now that Black American Sign Language (BASL) is in the news...it felt like a fitting and timely exchange. A few songs into her set, Badu glanced up at the screens, gestured to Atkins and pointed out how she was interpreting her band’s uptempo, bass‑heavy musical interludes. And let me tell you, nobody could have interpreted Badu's band in this way but a Black woman doing BASL."</p><p><a href="https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2025/07/11913405/erykah-badu-essence-fest-new-music-asl-performance" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">refinery29.com/en-us/2025/07/1</span><span class="invisible">1913405/erykah-badu-essence-fest-new-music-asl-performance</span></a></p><p><a href="https://med-mastodon.com/tags/EssenceFest" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>EssenceFest</span></a> <a href="https://med-mastodon.com/tags/deaf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>deaf</span></a> <a href="https://med-mastodon.com/tags/interpreter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>interpreter</span></a> <a href="https://med-mastodon.com/tags/ASL" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ASL</span></a> <a href="https://med-mastodon.com/tags/BASL" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BASL</span></a> <a href="https://med-mastodon.com/tags/accessibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>accessibility</span></a> <a href="https://med-mastodon.com/tags/language" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>language</span></a> <a href="https://med-mastodon.com/tags/BlackMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BlackMastodon</span></a></p>

Interpretation and Inquiry —

To illustrate the role of sign relations in inquiry we begin with Dewey's elegant and simple example of reflective thinking in everyday life.

❝A man is walking on a warm day. The sky was clear the last time he observed it; but presently he notes, while occupied primarily with other things, that the air is cooler. It occurs to him that it is probably going to rain; looking up, he sees a dark cloud between him and the sun, and he then quickens his steps. What, if anything, in such a situation can be called thought? Neither the act of walking nor the noting of the cold is a thought. Walking is one direction of activity; looking and noting are other modes of activity. The likelihood that it will rain is, however, something suggested. The pedestrian feels the cold; he thinks of clouds and a coming shower.❞ (John Dewey, How We Think, 6–7).

The term "interpreter" in computer science is probably misleading because a human interpreter suppose to convert spoken/sign language into another spoken/sign language, but an interpreter in computer science is program executes anther program without a need to convert or translate a program from one language into another language. #interpreter

Language policy in the Belgian Senate.

In this parliamentary committee room (for institutional reforms) there’s live interpreting for the two main national languages: Dutch and French.

But on the microphones the instructions are written down in neither language, but in English (which has no legal status as a language in Belgium).

(I love it.)

New profile, new #introduction

I'm Ártemis, aka #queerterpreter. This is my academic/languagery account, or that's what I'm going for. I'm a #sociolinguist and a PhD Candidate researching non-binary Spanish. I'm also an ES<>EN #translator and #interpreter. My diss leans heavily on #corpus linguistics, specifically corpora scraped from the birdsite. The data is safe but I'm in mourning.

My more personal acct is at @queerterpreter@queer.party, feel free to follow both or just one (or none) :Schwerified:
