I had a research fellowship on the transport of volcanic ash from Icelandic volcanoes to Europe. I wrote a number of blog post explainers.

These are best for context.

+ We'd expect an ash cloud to reach the UK about once every 20 years: all-geo.org/volcan01010/2011/0

+ A history of ash clouds and aviation: all-geo.org/volcan01010/2014/0

+ An Icelandic eruption 100x more powerful than E2010: all-geo.org/volcan01010/2012/0

A nice write up on the BBC about the Eyjafjallajökull ash cloud eruption, 15 years ago this week.

---

Experts believe that if the 2010 volcanic ash event happened today there would be "nowhere near the same level, if any, disruption" according to both Dr Hort and Mr Nicholson, largely because we now know that the level of ash seen in UK airspace in 2010 was relatively low and safe to fly in.

But Dr Hort warns: "You can always have a bigger eruption."

Volcano erupting with large amounts of ash entering the sky
BBC WeatherFifteen years after a volcano shut European airspace, could it happen again?Could volcanic ash close down airspace across the UK and Europe bringing the widespread disruption we experienced in 2010.

For the second year in a row, the whaling season has not taken place in Iceland, and there is every likelihood this abhorrent practice may be consigned to the past.

Strangely, here is one of the reasons as to why it no longer happens.

#Iceland’s second largest #whaling company, IP-Utgerd, ceased operations in 2020, citing declining profits and demand for whale meat facilitated by the #COVID-19 pandemic

Possibly Covid's only benefit?

“We decided to play because we wanted to see the Icelandic flag at the World Championship, and not the Israeli one.”

The Iceland women’s national handball team has issued a statement encouraging Icelandic sports authorities to bar Israeli teams from participating in international tournaments.

Lovely article on former Icelandic fisherman visiting the Hull Maritime Project, which manages not to once mention the Cod Wars! As a Hull native who remembers the last one very well, this is quite a feat.

Some good news and some bad news from #Iceland.

Hvalur hf. - the only company licensed for this barbaric "hunting" - has cancelled this year’s #whaling season.

Fortunately, market changes mean that exporting the "product" is no longer economically viable.
Unfortunately, the bad news is that this means nearly 200 local people are out of work. Let's hope that they find better permanent employment before the 2026 butchery begins.
