Hey, homebrewers that grow their own hops.
Since you, presumably, don't have your own homegrown hops analyzed for alpha acid content, do you just take a guess how much to use when you brew your first batch of beer with them and fine tune the quantity with subsequent batches?
Do you find much variation in the bittering (and flavoring) properties of your hops from year to year?
Thanks!
I was just checking how my First Gold hop plants are doing when I spotted this comma butterfly sunning itself on the wall right next to them. And guess what its caterpillars like to eat.
Clue: it ain't egg-and-cress sandwiches........

Before and after chopping the #hops down to get rid of any bull shoots and slow down their aggressive growth by a little bit. After this I'll put down some compost and maybe a little nitrogen fertilizer and then tie strings up for the new growth to climb.

This Black Forest Rye ESB-ish ale is a success. This rye malt gives a beautiful sweet red currant taste and my own EKG hops seem to have hit the mark on IBUs. Beautiful foam. Way too easy to drink.

Brew day tomorrow. Going to do a ESB-ish brew including some Black Forest Rye (Gladfield) with my own Goldings hops. 70g dried this year - first year for these bines. They smell lemony.
I probably need to harvest these Riwaka hops tomorrow. Would be ideal to wait another day or two but we are supposed to be getting some rain and wind. Better to harvest a little early than lose them all.
Already lost one of the bines due to wind a few weeks ago. This will still end up being enough for a batch of beer.
Another hops question:
When growing hops, do many of the cones drop to the ground as they are maturing? I have a dog that sometimes has the run of our land and I'm concerned she might try to eat some hops cones if they fall to the ground.
This project seeks to address the fact that “...for every 1 kilogram (2.2 lbs.) of material inside the cones that can be used to brew beer, there are 3.5 kilograms (7.7 lbs.) of wasted biomass from the rest of the plant. That’s a ratio that’s roughly 20% usable product to 80% waste.”
