The #CoeurdAlene Fire Department, Kootenai County Fire & Rescue, & the Northern Lakes Fire Protection District were met with gunfire in an “ambush style attack” upon responding to a wildlife vegetation fire on Canfield Mountain, a popular hiking area in Coeur d’Alene, said fire chief Pat Riley, of the Northern Lakes Fire Protection District.

Both #JohnHoffman & #MelissaHortman represented districts located north of #Minneapolis, #Minnesota.

Drew Evans, superintendent of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, said that authorities were actively searching for a suspect. Officials said the suspect was dressed as a law enforcement officer.

Autopsies will be done to determine extent of injuries, but Hortman & her spouse died from #gunshot wounds, Evans said.

Dr. Jeremy Faust, an ER doctor at Mass General Brigham Hospital in Boston, who was the study’s lead author, said he was dismayed to find that most of the #children’s #deaths were #homicides & #suicides.

“It’s surprising how few of these are accidents. I always thought that a lot of pediatric mortality from #guns is that somebody got into the wrong place, & I still think #SafeStorage is important, but it’s mostly homicides & suicides,”Faust said.

Firearm #deaths of #children & #teenagers rose significantly in states that enacted more permissive #GunLaws after #SCOTUS in 2010 limited local govts ability to restrict gun ownership, a new study has found.

In states that maintained stricter laws, gun deaths were stable after the ruling, researchers reported, & in some, even declined.
