Ross GradyIf you, like me, are trying to use a <a class="hashtag" href="https://dood.net/tag/gorton" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Gorton</a> family single-stroke typeface with a <a class="hashtag" href="https://dood.net/tag/glowforge" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Glowforge</a> laser cutter (or a <a class="hashtag" href="https://dood.net/tag/cnc" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#CNC</a> machine or a <a class="hashtag" href="https://dood.net/tag/cricut" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Cricut</a> or whatever), and you'd like an easy way to do type layout while keeping everything in the single-stroke vector space, it turns out there is a solution for that (!!): <a href="https://msurguy.github.io/cnc-text-tool/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://msurguy.github.io/cnc-text-tool/</a><br><br>If all of the above is gibberish but you're curious, basically, here's the thing:<br><br>- most vector drawing tools (I use <a class="hashtag" href="https://dood.net/tag/affinitydesigner" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#AffinityDesigner</a>) will happily open & use TrueType or OpenType fonts, but their model of a "font" is typically "a closed outline stroke with a fill"<br>- things like laser cutters and CNC machines love paths/strokes, but they don't grok "fill" (or, in the case of modern laser cutters, they do, but it's finicky and you have to do a lot of trial-and-error tweaking to get the stroke & the fill working together so that the type renders like you want it to)<br>- there are quite a few sources for single-path SVGs of classic engraving fonts (including Fedi's favorite, <a class="hashtag" href="https://dood.net/tag/gorton" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Gorton</a>) but if you want to actually lay out words instead of single characters . . . lotta manual work<br>- the web application I linked above solves **this specific problem** by letting you do text layout, and then it outputs a single SVG that you can import into your CNC software or into your vector drawing software for integration into your designs

Nomdeb<p>Sharing more playtime project. Laser with acrylic. Last thing was October birthday cake topper, inspired by photo of friends' little boy and his dog, looking out of their window together. I added in separate pumpkins and the word ONE. He's one obvs. :) I use Adobe Illustrator and cut on laser. I try to get kerf (hair width material laser removes when it cuts) exact 0.055" +/-, so acrylic inlay slots right in.
