#gate

On the UK's canals, locks allow boats to go uphill or downhill, in stepped chambers that raise or lower the water, so the boat can move on. As a lock chamber fills, every meter of water weighs about 40,000 kilos. The lock's gates must hold in that water.

An average 6½-foot gate weighs 950 kilos, or 2,000 pounds. Each one is handmade of solid wood, reinforced with steel plates, straps, and bolts.
