Taking the train can be almost twice as fast as flying for some journeys in France.

In 2023, France introduced a ban on domestic short-haul flights if there's a rail alternative of under two and a half hours. It was brought in to curb carbon emissions, but swapping a plane for a train could also be the cheaper and, it turns out, faster option.

Some intercity journeys can be almost twice as fast by train as by plane, research found.

It's a bit annoying when travelling families don't select seats in advance, and then other passengers get asked to move to less appealing seats in order to accommodate them. If you're flying in a group, select your seats!

After the Young Eagles rally I had some time and decided to fly around a little. I got a ram mount for my yoke and wanted to test it a bit (I like it a lot more than having the ipad on my thigh). I also "suffered" a little spontaneous disassembly of my air vent and had to wait until I was back on the ground to mess with it.

Overall, a nice flight seeing things starting to turn green.

Today by me in The Age and Sydney Morning Herald - I recount a frantic mission to get my cabin luggage down to 7kg for a budget airline flight from Serbia.

(I slipped in a reference to Blake's 7, and was pleasantly surprised that the editor didn't remove it. What a classic TV series.)

Dash out to pick up a print copy, and I'll share the link here when it goes online.

That flight I was hoping would stay cheap managed to stay. We didn't get the lowest fare I had seen (<$500) but snagged a $690 one way Westjet ticket, Nanaimo to Barcelona; cancellable/changeable and includes seats, checked bag, and carry-on. Incredible value.

It's also the lowest CO2 hit by air from Western Canada.

Hardware: (Canadian made) Dash 8 Turboprop from Nanaimo to Calgary (93kg pp) and B787 to Barcelona (425kg pp).

There are no direct flights to Spain west of Calgary. I'm frankly shocked AC or WS don't have a B777 or B787 in the summer and winter from Vancouver to Barcelona… it would fill! Perhaps its capacity on the Barcelona side that is full up.

I love the Dash 8. A little noisy compared to a standard jet, but I really like the feel of smaller aircraft. And they generally fly lower, so the views over the rockies especially are fantastic.

That's cool Vanessa, let's build a high-speed train network in Australia instead. Solved.

"Net zero could make flying 'something for the privileged,' the boss of Australia’s biggest airline has warned.

"Qantas chief executive Vanessa Hudson said the higher costs associated with clean fuel were likely to push up airfares and could put them out of reach of the masses."
