Quite some privacy experts from academia and other professionals out there calling upon the European institutions to safeguard the independence.

Politely not naming Gencarelli directly, they refer to a potential conflict of interest in the role when appointing someone who has spent 12 years working in managerial roles at the European Commission.

It is still open how the negotiations between EP and Council on future of EDPS end.

Where do you get the claim from that it would be because of the left?
Left has 5 MEPs in LIBE. If you include Greens/S&D to left bloc its 24 MEPs. MEPs could vote (in secret) for multiple candidates. Wiewiórowski received 26 votes.
The article you link to also says Gencarelli got a majority because of support by EPP + those further right?

Also: Council today voted in favour of Wiewiórowski, so the question of who is the next is still to be negotiated between EP & Council.

Looks like #Microsoft appointed the new Data Protection Supervisor of the #EU.

This happened because the “left-liberal camp” did not agree on which candidate to support, if I am reading the news correctly.

I saw outgoing EDPS Wojciech Wiewiórowski at more than one @fnf meeting, and I doubt that his successor will turn up at this grassroots #privacy barcamp.
