@martv @nixCraft WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted now, but probably won't stay that way.

Out of all the currently #e2e encrypted services, #WhatsApp is rated most likely to start providing access to the government, which means an architecture change is coming manifold.markets/DonMarti7bd2/

(It looks like Meta management considers their position on the AI benchmark leaderboard and their connections with the Trump Administration as more important than this one point of software design)

ManifoldWill Meta provide the content of a WhatsApp message to US law enforcement before January 20, 2029?57% chance. Background: WhatsApp, owned by Meta, currently uses end-to-end encryption for all messages, meaning only the sender and recipient can read message contents. While WhatsApp can and does share certain metadata with law enforcement, they cannot access the actual content of encrypted messages in the current version of the Whatsapp software. Resolution Criteria This market will resolve YES if, before January 20, 2029, one of the listed Internet news sites reports that Meta has provided the content of at least one WhatsApp message to a US law enforcement agency. "Content" refers to the actual text, images, videos, or other media sent in messages, not to metadata such as user names, IP addresses, or timestamps. Internet news sites: 404 Media, Ars Technica, Business Insider, The Markup, ProPublica, The Register, TechCrunch, The Verge.

#Technology
Lol, had been thinking bout #OnlineStorage only yesterday.

However, while #E2E is nice, I'd argue, in the age of #AI and #QuantumComputing, nothing is really safe, if your data is hosted in an unsecure legal environment.
The #US' #CloudAct, jointly with a ever-more #Totalitarian Administration should be dark-red warning signs for any storage physically or corporately based in the #US.

So, apart from #Swiss-based #Proton, what options R left?

@ente So glad I found your photo service.

I completed my #GooglePhotos #Takeout and have upload my entire #Photography library to ente.io. Used delete duplicates to clean up my collection. I found the facial recognition to be very accurate. Object recognition quite good too.

If you are looking for a secure, #e2e private cloud storage service for your #SilentSunday and other #photos that is not #Google, I'd suggest giving #Ente a try!

enteMachine LearningLearn how Ente uses on-device machine learning to power private, end-to-end encrypted features like face recognition and semantic search—without a cloud.

Ever with that you and a friend could break out from DMs, have a quick realtime chat in the browser, and be assured that it was E2E, ephemeral, and completely deleted when the last person leaves the chat room?

Now you can!

Use /nick to rename yourself.

Check out the code and run it yourself.

It's #E2E chat in the browser, ephemeral, everything is stored in memory, deleted when the last person leaves the chat room. Set up as many chats as you want, send files up to 4MB in size (images and zip files work) everything streaming over using the web #cryptography api.

Therapists of the fediverse: how do you communicate safely with clients or other professionals privacy-wise?

How do you organise this communication in a way so that no-one - including police - can steal it?

Are you using encrypted computers and #email or #messengers with #e2e #encryption? - If so, what messengers or method are you using?

Are you storing documents in a safe? If so, where and what brand?

What is feasible, what is practical?

It's so tempting to use data that is there.. And we have no way to verify which part of our data is actually used.. Can we really trust the BigTechs to decide this on their own ? Can this be solved without encryption ? #privacy #e2e

Update:
Proton removed their response (link below) from Mastodon, seems they realized it exploded into their face.

Update 2, Reddit post from Andy Yen today: reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/commen (text in responses below)

Original toot:
After I had given #Protonmail the benefit of the doubt for one board member making inconsiderate and alarming statements on #MAGA #Trump, they have doubled down officially:
mastodon.social/@protonprivacy

I therefore consider this official opinion of Proton. Focussing on one aspect and completely ignoring the bigger picture of a luming fascist period in the most militarized economy of the world is just inacceptable. Proton just could have kept their mouth shut, but they decided not to.
Thanks for revealing yourselves and happy to end my subscription, I won't support a company like you until you do better @protonprivacy

Please boost to spread this news if you find this important.
