In Europe, #weedkiller atrazine has been banned for nearly two decades because of its suspected links to reproductive problems like reduced sperm quality and birth defects.
In the #UnitedStates, it remains one of the most widely used #pesticides, sprayed on #corn, #sugarcane and other #crops, result of years of industry #lobbying. It has been detected in #drinkingwater of 40M Americans.

#Trump #EPA plans to rescind & reconsider limits on 4 different #ForeverChemicals under a landmark #DrinkingWater standard implemented last year by President #Biden, acc/to documents.

The drinking water rules were adopted as part of Biden’s efforts to limit public exposure to #PFAS, #hazardous #chemicals linked to range of serious illnesses. The original rule covered 6 common PFAS contaminants, including #PFOA, a known human #carcinogen, & #PFOS, a likely carcinogen.

Nearly Half of People in the #US Have #Toxic #PFAS in Their #DrinkingWater
Data from #EPA show "Drinking water is a major source of PFAS exposure. The sheer number of contaminated sites shows that these chemicals are likely present in most of the U.S. water supply," said David Andrews, deputy director of investigations and a senior scientist at the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit advocacy organization, in a recent press release.

#Trump is proposing to cut, by $2.4B, a program that offers low-cost financing for #WaterQuality projects, targeting the largest source of federal funds for #DrinkingWater utilities, #sewage treatment plants & other #infrastructure like #water #pipes.

The program had gotten a major boost under #Biden’s #infrastructure #law. But Trump claims the money was “heavily earmarked by the #Congress for projects that are ultimately not repaid into the program, & bypass states’ interest & planning.”

The #law, which was signed by #Republican Gov #SpencerCox on March 27 & will go into effect on May 7, comes amid renewed scrutiny of #fluoride, a mineral that has been widely added to US #DrinkingWater since 1945 to prevent cavities. Controversy over the safety of water fluoridation has intensified in recent years, driven in part by #ConspiracyTheories & by growing resistance to #PublicHealth interventions since the #pandemic.
