Unbidden, the caravan camels stepped faster, setting their harness bells to chime. The drivers laughed at libelous jokes or prayed to their small gods. The moon that had threatened to vanish now waxed strong.</p><p>Forgotten was Far Karabash, its walls decaying in the gloom. No caravans, jars of aromatic spices, or bolts of fabulous silks would enter its gates. The crystal fountains of Minashi-by-the-Sea ceased murmuring a dirge for its passing. Her deft needle stitching an endless supply of shrouds. To slacken was to invite the gnawing of small teeth at ankles already bereft of feet.
