Per the New York Times, DHS and Immigrations & Customs pepper sprayed the original crowd (from what I saw in the original video, those who fired on the crowd were dressed differently than the National Guard).

It seems like the situation wouldn’t have developed like this if the federalized National Guard didn’t push the relatively small crowd (that seemed peaceful) onto the street and then pepper spray them (at least from what I see).

But the crowds are now blocking a major highway. LAPD officers have threatened arrest.

Sure, a few of the protesters were “mouthy,” as a reporter noted, but nothing had happened all day. I had been watching the broadcast kind of in the background for quite a bit, and honestly, it was boring and I was about to shut it off.
Officials told the crowd to stand behind a line of some sort, but it was difficult to tell where that line was, per the reporter.

This New York Time headline and image does NOT depict what I saw happen (in the previous live broadcast).
To me, the words combined with the image make it look like the National Guard had to fend off violent protesters, when that just wasn’t the case. From what I saw, the people were peacefully gathered on the sidewalk, exercising their First Amendment Constitutional rights.
