Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"In his new book Move Slowly and Build Bridges, Robert W. Gehl tells the story of the activists, software developers, artists, and everyday people who have built the fediverse, a noncentralized alternative social media system. Unlike big tech corporations like Facebook, TikTok, or X, the fediverse is comprised of thousands of small, independent communities who use a Web protocol to communicate with one another.</p><p>These small communities govern themselves and moderate content at the human scale — compare that to Facebook and X, which try to moderate global conversations. And the fediverse isn’t built in order to gather user data and sell attention to marketers — it’s a more privacy-respecting social media alternative.</p><p>The most notable part of the fediverse is Mastodon. Founded in 2016, Mastodon was positioned as an alternative to Twitter. Like Twitter (or X), Mastodon members can post, like, share, and connect with one another across the world. Unlike Twitter/X, Mastodon can be completely under the control of its members, from how it’s run to its underlying software.</p><p>Making a noncentralized, ethically run social media system isn’t easy. The people building the fediverse have faced long hours, burnout, angry debates, and, worst of all, bigotry, death threats, and discrimination. They face constant, nagging doubts: Can we really do this? Can noncentralized social media survive in a world that is used to corporate social media? Can we—all of us—have our own social media?"</p><p><a href="https://moveslowlybuildbridges.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">moveslowlybuildbridges.com/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/SocialMedia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SocialMedia</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/SocialNetworks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SocialNetworks</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Mastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mastodon</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Fediverse</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Decentralization" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Decentralization</span></a></p>

Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"Simon Willison has a plan for the end of the world. It’s a USB stick, onto which he has loaded a couple of his favorite open-weight LLMs—models that have been shared publicly by their creators and that can, in principle, be downloaded and run with local hardware. If human civilization should ever collapse, Willison plans to use all the knowledge encoded in their billions of parameters for help. “It’s like having a weird, condensed, faulty version of Wikipedia, so I can help reboot society with the help of my little USB stick,” he says.</p><p>But you don’t need to be planning for the end of the world to want to run an LLM on your own device. Willison, who writes a popular blog about local LLMs and software development, has plenty of compatriots: r/LocalLLaMA, a subreddit devoted to running LLMs on your own hardware, has half a million members.<br>For people who are concerned about privacy, want to break free from the control of the big LLM companies, or just enjoy tinkering, local models offer a compelling alternative to ChatGPT and its web-based peers.</p><p>The local LLM world used to have a high barrier to entry: In the early days, it was impossible to run anything useful without investing in pricey GPUs. But researchers have had so much success in shrinking down and speeding up models that anyone with a laptop, or even a smartphone, can now get in on the action. “A couple of years ago, I’d have said personal computers are not powerful enough to run the good models. You need a $50,000 server rack to run them,” Willison says. “And I kept on being proved wrong time and time again.”"</p><p><a href="https://www.technologyreview.com/2025/07/17/1120391/how-to-run-an-llm-on-your-laptop/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">technologyreview.com/2025/07/1</span><span class="invisible">7/1120391/how-to-run-an-llm-on-your-laptop/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/GenerativeAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GenerativeAI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/LLMs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LLMs</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Chatbots" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Chatbots</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/LocalLLMs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LocalLLMs</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Privacy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Privacy</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/DataProtection" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DataProtection</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Decentralization" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Decentralization</span></a></p>

Stefano Marinelli<p>On 14h July (though it was already the 15th here), some of my monitoring jails started throwing errors. Not all of them, though. On the same host, an Uptime Kuma instance was showing a ton of servers down, while LibreNMS wasn't displaying any issues. After investigating, I discovered why. The jail running LibreNMS was using local_unbound (integrated into FreeBSD), while the other, perhaps for speed, was using Cloudflare's DNS.</p><p>DNS is like email, the Fediverse, and other similar services: they work better and make us freer when they're decentralized.</p><p>Let's go back to decentralizing the internet. Its very existence, as we've known it, depends on it.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/BeFree" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BeFree</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Decentralization" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Decentralization</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/SysAdmin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SysAdmin</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/IT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>IT</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Technology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Technology</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Internet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Internet</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Networking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Networking</span></a></p>

Roni Laukkarinen<p>I've been following ATProto's development from the sidelines since 2022, but I somehow missed this great take by <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://social.coop/@eloquence" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>eloquence</span></a></span> on Bluesky interoperability with Mastodon and ActivityPub: <a href="https://github.com/bluesky-social/atproto/discussions/1716" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">github.com/bluesky-social/atpr</span><span class="invisible">oto/discussions/1716</span></a></p><p>"We currently have two emerging alternatives to X that deserve to be taken seriously: the fediverse and BlueSky. The fediverse tends to attract folks who highly value open source in principle and practice; BlueSky tends to attract folks who are looking for a drop-in Twitter replacement.</p><p>In this context, I would argue that a clear commitment from the key parties (that includes @Gargron's Mastodon gGmbH and Bluesky the company) towards an interoperable social web is essential. We should be able to follow each other no matter where we decide to make our social media home. Even Mark Zuckerberg's Threads has at least made a commitment towards interoperability."</p><p>It's a good read. Year after year, it feels like ATProto and ActivityPub, Bluesky and Mastodon, couldn't be further apart. Even Nostr and WordPress support ActivityPub. We're seeing more servers and clients in the Fediverse adopting ActivityPub. As far as I know, 99% of ATProto is still powered by Bluesky's main server, which makes it not very decentralized. I wonder why anyone would want to set up a server for ATProto when ActivityPub is so much more widely used.</p><p>I see Bluesky and ATProto's future as just another private company, like the rest. It's easy to pretend decentralization and open source just for marketing.</p><p><a href="https://mementomori.social/tags/Bluesky" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Bluesky</span></a> <a href="https://mementomori.social/tags/Decentralization" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Decentralization</span></a> <a href="https://mementomori.social/tags/Fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Fediverse</span></a> <a href="https://mementomori.social/tags/ActivityPub" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ActivityPub</span></a> <a href="https://mementomori.social/tags/ATProto" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ATProto</span></a></p>
