🌍 Commons, Not Conglomerates
Taxation can guide, not punish. Steuern steuern.

🏢 Proprietary IP → high tax
🧩 Permissive FLOSS → moderate tax
🔄 Copyleft/commons → near-zero tax + public support

And when you share while alive, society buys your freedom — castles, cars, and all.

This is the give economy.
Not charity. Incentivized solidarity.

@lwriemen @thelinuxEXP yes, I have some misgivings about OSI, too. And I'd also prefer that we didn't pander to corporate interests by using 'open source' over free or #libre software. I'm definitely of the #copyleft persuasion. To my mind, the only purpose of 'weak' open source licenses is to be easily exploitable by proprietary (corporate) interests. But, my ultimate goal is for any software not implementing *open standards* to be effectively eliminated by regulators. Let's ditch proprietary.

“The primary purpose of AGPL appears to be creating barriers for public cloud providers, which likely guarantees that major sponsors like Amazon and Google will continue to support Valkey.” - Vadim Tkachenko, Percona co-founder.

Respectfully, no. This is not the purpose or the reason.

@jbqueru My key recommendation to #FOSS projects is to use a #copyleft license, but then also have both a strong Code of Conduct for contributors. & a pledge that indicates the project will not accept feature requests or support requests from unethical actors in other areas of endeavor.

The biggest problem isn't the FOSS license doesn't stop unrelated bad behavior by this horrible companies: it's that the FOSS community gladly gives them free-as-in-labor help to solve their issues.

Fortunately some developers stepped up to fork the Simple apps under the name Fossify;

fossify.org/apps/

So we can still have that simple, pleasant app experience we know and love, with regular updates via F-Droid or our app manager of choice.

This is a textbook example of how Free Code licenses, which enshrine the software freedoms of the people who use software, can protect us from enshittification.

@charlie_root @nigel for the record, I've made a 30 year career out of developing software. Neither I, nor my companies, have ever developed a single bit of proprietary software. I only make #libre software, almost all #copyleft. Here's my story if you're interested: davelane.nz/my-open-history

Dave Lane · My Open HistoryThis is a story about the sort of "open" that matters to me, and how I got to this point.

@nuddlegg Finally, it may also be worth discussing the benefits of restricting knowledge and considering that any published work is, by definition, public so refraining from its uses or diffusion may be pointless ultimately. Basically, #noai versus #copyleft.

Curious to read your thoughts about this.

OK! I was finally able to ask Yanis Varoufakis if he knows copyleft and the free software movement are behind him and if he'll work more with the EFF to push for public ownership of "the cloud".

I really want him to see and use the power of copyleft in his strategies with DiEM25 and the Progressive International. Neither group is much in the #Fediverse yet, I've noticed. But the political infrastructure exists!

@slashdot The three knights of the apocalypse.

#SteveBallmer was one of the worst things that happened to the software industry.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Ba

"He maintained that his comments in 2001 were right at the time but that times have changed."

Not thanks to him. And #Microsoft does not use #Copyleft licenses in their works, like most corporations, including #Google.

Had it not been a monopoly, Microsoft would have disappeared.

A large majority of people confuse privacy with data protection. And lately I'm noticing an uproar of ideologies that claim to be pro-freedom in one way or another, but which threaten freedom as a whole. I think there is a certain copyright mentality to them. Certain misunderstanding of ownership which makes fighting for freed...

I want every program that’s required to participate productively in society to be #FreeSoftware

Because Free Software allows me to avoid direct remote control of what I can do. And it enables me to help others with my #programming skills.

That’s why I think we need #copyleft. Ideally the AGPL, because only that keeps webservices free. And those are programs, too.

(a discussion got me thinking why I contribute to FLOSS projects; besides wanting to share what I create, this is the reason)
