Ricardo Harvin<p>I finally watched the movie Coherence (2016) last night, and though it's a bit rough and unpolished, the premise is very good and plays out excellently.</p><p>It's on Peacock now, but I think I had it for a long time in my Hulu queue (it's gone now).</p><p>It's a typical white person dinner party flick that slowly devolves into something unsettling and disturbing.</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Coherence" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Coherence</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/movie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>movie</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/film" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>film</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Peacock" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Peacock</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/SciFi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SciFi</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/thriller" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>thriller</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/horror" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>horror</span></a></p>

This integration and coordination is brought about by constraints, which operate across different scales and dimensions to weave together streams of energy, matter, and information flow.</p><p>It's a good definition, in my estimation. I have been concerned with the question of "coherence" and how relative coherence of two systems might be measured and compared, for a couple decades now, My specific interest is in application to comparing different models of (human) values, hierarchical and fine-grained. [I often refer to this in terms of "increasing coherence over increasing context"]</p><p>The best approach I have envisioned so far is in terms of maximizing flow through a network, and I'm inspired by her reference to weaving together streams of energy, matter, and information flow. I see some parallels to notions of trophic flow in ecological networks, and a certain "resonance" with Ulanowicz's thinking on "Ascendancy". </p><p><a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/coherence" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>coherence</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/context" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>context</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/ArrowOfMorality" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ArrowOfMorality</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/JuarreroBook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>JuarreroBook</span></a></p>

In this paper we take a problem that is hard (coherence for structured functors), do a *bunch* of really abstract stuff (2-monad theory), and come out with a solution that makes your life* significantly better.</p><p>[*Here, "your life" means the part of your life you spend checking diagrams of braided monoidal functors. Or, more generally, pseudomorphisms for algebras over a 2-monad.]</p><p>Almost 1/5 of this paper is dedicated to real, genuine examples, and that's what I want to focus on below. I'll say just a bit about the more abstract machinery on which the examples are based. If you've been following along, this is the culmination of my series "weird facts about monoidal functors and coherence" [1,2,3,4].</p><p>[1] <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/@nilesjohnson/110741323263984146" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">mathstodon.xyz/@nilesjohnson/1</span><span class="invisible">10741323263984146</span></a><br>[2] <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/@nilesjohnson/110876487813747736" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">mathstodon.xyz/@nilesjohnson/1</span><span class="invisible">10876487813747736</span></a><br>[3] <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/@nilesjohnson/110979458364785667" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">mathstodon.xyz/@nilesjohnson/1</span><span class="invisible">10979458364785667</span></a><br>[4] <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/@nilesjohnson/111070640771166081" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">mathstodon.xyz/@nilesjohnson/1</span><span class="invisible">11070640771166081</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/CategoryTheory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CategoryTheory</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/MonoidalFunctor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MonoidalFunctor</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/Coherence" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Coherence</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/Braided" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Braided</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/Symmetric" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Symmetric</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/PseudomorphismClassifier" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PseudomorphismClassifier</span></a></p><p>(1/14)</p>
