"I gave them names, which real farmers never do. The red (RIP) was Hen-rietta. The two Easter Eggers I called Roger Featherer and Lilly Pullet-zer. A mottled Araucana with a puff of gray feathers beneath her chin was Janice, the Bearded Lady. And the pair of identical Buff Orpingtons I called Muffy and Buffy." —Christopher Solomon for Orion Magazine

Those of a sensitive nature, scroll on. Optimists may be rewarded for persevering.

Red, star of such posts as 'Would You Like To Talk To Me About Dinosaurs' and 'Chicken SWAT Team Available For Hire' - not to mention Tormentor Of The Cat - was attacked by a fox earlier this evening, in the back garden and in broad daylight.

If it hadn't been for Lily's yelling - a skill honed after every sodding time she's laid an egg, like it was a miracle of nature* - I wouldn't have gone running out to find the fox pinning Red to the ground, amongst a mountain of feathers. I assumed she was a goner, but ran back inside with her, to where the other chickens had fled and were tucking into some chicken-flavoured dog food, to find her still breathing.

Anyway, she's eaten her own bodyweight in sweetcorn, is about to get a bunch of useful drugs and they've all taken up residence in the kitchen. Apart from a bald arse she's essentially bloody but unbowed.

Whether the fox survived the ordeal is anybody's guess. Thoughts and prayers.

(*: It kind of is)

Red is on my left knee in the picture, but you knew that already.

April 14th.

A week ago today, one of our chickens had to undergo surgery due to an impacted crop.

Since the musculature for peristalsis is still not functioning 100%, we need to regularly massage the crop and its contents for a few more days to avoid another blockage.

The chicken seems completely relaxed, in good spirits, and curious during the process.

Apologies for slow updates on the #FediverseChicks - they've been busy representing at the local pre-school.

They took it like true champs and were super calm, together with their mum, but as a compensation for their hassle they did get some quality time in the vegetable field (under strict supervision).

More work in the yard this morning and afternoon. Mainly had to move the chicken coop!

A few years back, with a different coop the very first time we got chickens, we did a farmer pose with a pitchfork and a shovel and stuff. No tools this time. 😂

Also emptied the water that accumulated *under* the pool liner.

Next task will be to spread the big dirt pile over the whole back section from the foot of the stairs to the fence. Many shovel fulls are in my future!

Sadly gotta get rid of our rooster - we've not managed to get the flock ratio right yet and our poor girls are in rag order.
I'd really appreciate if anyone in #Aotearoa could please share this posting on their networks. I'm hoping to find a new home for Rudy, but do acknowledge that's not a given and would like to give him the best chance possible!
