PUPUWEB Blog<p>Alibaba, Tencent, and other Chinese AI firms have paused chatbot features like image recognition during China's college entrance exams to prevent cheating and ensure exam integrity. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AI</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/China" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>China</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Gaokao" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Gaokao</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/EdTech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>EdTech</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Chatbots" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Chatbots</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/TechPolicy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TechPolicy</span></a></p>
Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"Large language models do not, cannot, and will not “understand” anything at all. They are not emotionally intelligent or smart in any meaningful or recognizably human sense of the word. LLMs are impressive probability gadgets that have been fed nearly the entire internet, and produce writing not by thinking but by making statistically informed guesses about which lexical item is likely to follow another.</p><p>Many people, however, fail to grasp how large language models work, what their limits are, and, crucially, that LLMs do not think and feel but instead mimic and mirror. They are AI illiterate—understandably, because of the misleading ways its loudest champions describe the technology, and troublingly, because that illiteracy makes them vulnerable to one of the most concerning near-term AI threats: the possibility that they will enter into corrosive relationships (intellectual, spiritual, romantic) with machines that only seem like they have ideas or emotions."</p><p><a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/culture/archive/2025/06/artificial-intelligence-illiteracy/683021/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">theatlantic.com/culture/archiv</span><span class="invisible">e/2025/06/artificial-intelligence-illiteracy/683021/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/GenerativeAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GenerativeAI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Intelligence" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Intelligence</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/LLMs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LLMs</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Chatbots" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Chatbots</span></a></p>

Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"In contrast to love, addiction makes life smaller and less rich. By allowing companies to sell simulated humans, we leave ourselves open to a new way to be manipulated by the illusion of love and therefore possibly exploited by the processes of addiction. While current chatbots have had issues with being overly sycophantic, game designers and those who play hard to get in relationships have long known that being unpredictably rewarding escalates desire. The ability to employ such tactics, informed by people’s personal information and habits, can make these bots even more addictive for users.</p><p>Chatbots that can teach social skills and provide places to process problems when friends are overwhelmed and talk therapy is unavailable won’t necessarily be harmful to all or even most users. Indeed, many users report positive experiences. The same duality is seen with many potentially addictive drugs, which can be lifesaving when used therapeutically.</p><p>But we already know from the opioid crisis that both unfettered marketing and outright prohibition can do enormous damage. We need to act now to develop sensible and enforceable regulations to prevent companies from exploiting vulnerable people, especially youth."</p><p><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/03/opinion/chatbots-ai-addiction-love.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">nytimes.com/2025/06/03/opinion</span><span class="invisible">/chatbots-ai-addiction-love.html</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/GenerativeAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GenerativeAI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Chatbots" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Chatbots</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/MentalHealth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MentalHealth</span></a></p>

Professors would provide customized A.I. study bots for each class. Career services would offer recruiter chatbots for students to practice job interviews. And undergrads could turn on a chatbot’s voice mode to be quizzed aloud ahead of a test.</p><p>OpenAI dubs its sales pitch “A.I.-native universities.”</p><p>“Our vision is that, over time, A.I. would become part of the core infrastructure of higher education,” Leah Belsky, OpenAI’s vice president of education, said in an interview. In the same way that colleges give students school email accounts, she said, soon “every student who comes to campus would have access to their personalized A.I. account.”</p><p>To spread chatbots on campuses, OpenAI is selling premium A.I. services to universities for faculty and student use. It is also running marketing campaigns aimed at getting students who have never used chatbots to try ChatGPT."</p><p><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/07/technology/chatgpt-openai-colleges.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">nytimes.com/2025/06/07/technol</span><span class="invisible">ogy/chatgpt-openai-colleges.html</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/GenerativeAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GenerativeAI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/OpenAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenAI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Universities" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Universities</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/HigherEd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HigherEd</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Chatbots" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Chatbots</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/ChatGPT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ChatGPT</span></a></p>

Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"Recent generations of frontier language models have introduced Large Reasoning Models (LRMs) that generate detailed thinking processes before providing answers. While these models demonstrate improved performance on reasoning benchmarks, their fundamental capabilities, scal- ing properties, and limitations remain insufficiently understood. Current evaluations primarily focus on established mathematical and coding benchmarks, emphasizing final answer accuracy. However, this evaluation paradigm often suffers from data contamination and does not provide insights into the reasoning traces’ structure and quality. In this work, we systematically investigate these gaps with the help of controllable puzzle environments that allow precise manipulation of compositional complexity while maintaining consistent logical structures. This setup enables the analysis of not only final answers but also the internal reasoning traces, offering insights into how LRMs “think”. Through extensive experimentation across diverse puzzles, we show that frontier LRMs face a complete accuracy collapse beyond certain complexities. Moreover, they exhibit a counter- intuitive scaling limit: their reasoning effort increases with problem complexity up to a point, then declines despite having an adequate token budget. By comparing LRMs with their standard LLM counterparts under equivalent inference compute, we identify three performance regimes: (1) low- complexity tasks where standard models surprisingly outperform LRMs, (2) medium-complexity tasks where additional thinking in LRMs demonstrates advantage, and (3) high-complexity tasks where both models experience complete collapse. We found that LRMs have limitations in exact computation: they fail to use explicit algorithms and reason inconsistently across puzzles."</p><p><a href="https://machinelearning.apple.com/research/illusion-of-thinking" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">machinelearning.apple.com/rese</span><span class="invisible">arch/illusion-of-thinking</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/GenerativeAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GenerativeAI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/LLMs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LLMs</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Reasoning" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Reasoning</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Chatbots" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Chatbots</span></a></p>
