Time is rare when you're figuring out how to #CNC the best way, replacing #ip drivers and proprietary software controller with #FreeSoftware like #grbl + #arduino, while finding best #CAD & #CAM alternatives to commercial #fusion365 and #vcarve tools in #extensions for @inkscape like #gcodetools, #addons for @Blender like #fabexCNC and last but not least the universal gcode sender #UGS as perfect post-processor for a free workflow.

That assembled like a clockwork makes a lot of noise, dust, and work, but beautiful sculptures. What would you cut out of wood first?

Tutorial: Getting Started With the SheetMetal Workbench
FreeCAD is excellent in that it can be used for design projects for all manner of fabrication approaches. A really interesting fabrication approach is cutting, bending and joining sheet metal. As such FreeCAD has a dedicated addon workbench that’s incredibly helpful in designing for flat sheet materials. #CAD #CAM #MetalWork #Fabrication

Hello people! I've been on the Fediverse for couple of years now, so here's my re-#introduction

I'm Ari, better known by my tag APZ and this is my #pinball repair, #arcade and #retrogaming account. I mostly post about playing and repairing pinball machines, but I also work on #retrocomputing with all the classics.

An IT guy by day, I moonlight as a pinball arcade owner here in #finland with my partner @quester. This is purely a hobby of mine, I do this to keep my sanity and to keep pinball alive for the next generations of players. At the moment I own a bit over 30 pinball machines from 70s to 2020s.

A lot of what I do involves #electronics, #CAD for now obsolete parts and #3dprinting and tabletop #cnc to recreate them.

I love to #travel, usually to meet like-minded arcade collectors. I have a strong preference to #repair stuff instead of throwing it away. I'm a #linux user since mid-90s, having been part of #foss movement most of my life. I also edit arcade related videos.

I'm looking for an app to design scaffolding pipes based furniture.

I'd like to make images similar to these:

steigerhout-bouwtekeningen.nl/

Incl options to:

- change pipe dimensions
- select diff connectors
- calculate prices
- create a 'cut plan' to limit waste

All based on pipes & connectors available in NL/EU.

Does @FreeCAD allow me to do this?

Are there other apps I should look into?

Must run on Linux or in the browser.

Hallelujah! AutoCAD's DWG is a closed format that Linux CAD apps can't properly read. Well, there's apparently now a freeware Linux utility, ODA File Converter, that allows you to convert from DWG to DXF. Get the .appimage from here: opendesign.com/guestfiles/oda_

LibreCAD and other Linux apps I tested can now read these common files fine as DXF! A great solution for my brother too, who I recently converted to Linux too.

I'm thinking today about disaster account recovery. My master password is literally the key to my entire digital presence, and I want to make a little box for safe, secret storage.

Question for you #CAD #design #3DPrinting and #engineering folks - how would you design a tamper-evident little box that you load once and can tell if it's been opened before? What mechanism could you use if it was 3D printed? I know serial'd stickers and zip ties exist, I'm hoping for a DIY makeable solution.

I don't understand why #QCad is not very popular in the Linux community. It has a free, GPL version that is way more put together than LibreCAD. In fact, LibreCAD is a fork of QCad from the late 2000s. QCad has way more features now, and most are free.

Sure, there's FreeCAD too, but that's more about 3D CAD, and it's more difficult to learn & use. QCad is a good starter 2D Cad/Cam, especially if you're coming from #AutoCAD 's UI.

Continued thread

Ok, for those who don't know I am a super noob at CAD and 3D modeling. I have only just picked up trying it in the last couple months and have tried 4 different softwares to do it and am not good with any of them. Needless to say, this is the most complex project I've ever done like this. All that said, I am really happy with how far I've come so far. The design has definitely had to evolve from where it was in my head with the realistic limitations of my skills and the real world measurements of the parts I'm working with, but I'm still liking where it is ending up so far. Again there's still a long way to go but this is the first time I've had a semi-tangible look at what I'm trying to accomplish.
