Cette espèce a une génération par an dans le nord de la France et en montagne, et deux voire trois dans le sud. <br>
Les larves aquatiques sont territoriales et vivent dans la végétation immergée à proximité des rives, là où l'eau est peu profonde. <br>
Les mâles de cette espèce ne sont pas territoriaux et les imagos forment des populations denses au bord des étangs. Ils possèdent un pouvoir colonisateur important et apparaissent rapidement sur les pièces d'eau nouvellement créées. <br>
L'accouplement dure entre 3 et 8 heures. <br>
Les femelles pondent seules et insèrent leurs œufs dans la végétation flottante ou immergée sans jamais descendre sous la surface de l'eau.<br>
