📝 New blog post: #GapJunctions (#ElectricalSynapses) enable direct electrical and chemical communication between #neurons, synchronizing activity and supporting rapid signal propagation. Their #modeling is crucial for understanding #NeuralNetworkDynamics, #oscillations, and #brain 🧠 function. Here is a brief summary including a small #PythonTutorial using the #NESTsimulator.

New preprint/model: the Rosa-Margin Hypothesis. When the vCA1 safety buffer shrinks (<~5 mV), everyday network transients trigger involuntary replay of emotional engrams → SZ/MDD/PTSD trajectories.
Falsifiable endpoints: MEG γ-burst ↓ ≥35%, HRV rMSSD +≥5 ms.

How I failed the "tide test" (I made that up) and what it taught me about reality.

As a young adult I visited a new friend by the ocean. We hiked along the top of cliffs, then they took me down to the beach on a steep narrow path.

Walking out onto a vast extent of mud and rocks, they casually said "the tide was low and will be coming in".

Twenty something me immediately did a u-turn and headed back to the path.

What are you doing?

The tide in coming in, you said.

Does human episodic memory 🧠 depend on context-invariant or conjunctive coding of single neurons in the human hippocampus?

A recent TiCS (cell.com/trends/cognitive-scie) paper stimulated a very interesting debate about the nature of hippocampal coding in human episodic memory that i found very insightful.

The discussion centers around context-invariant coding of concept neurons (CN) vs. conjunctive coding of episode-specific neurons (ESN) in the hippocampus, both following different lines of thinking about the HCs involvement in episodic memory.

🧠 What happens when your brain can no longer feel fear?

Meet S.M., a woman whose amygdala was destroyed by a rare disease.
She’s held snakes without flinching, laughed through haunted houses, and faced real danger with complete calm.

Her life offers a rare glimpse into how the brain processes fear — and what’s lost when that alarm system is gone.
