#bookbinding

Stitched my first book block today, for a baby album. It was surprisingly straightforward to do a kettle stitch, but I definitely recommend having a curved needle. This was so satisfying and fun!

I want to try a stitch with ribbons or ropes sometime too.

@susankayequinn very much in favor of making books more accessible and #DIY in this way! I got into #bookbinding a few months ago and found it to be much easier to make decent quality books than I'd ever expected! I favor the Pretty Perfect Paperback method but it's easy to jump to hardcovers from there! You can turn any PDF of an ebook into a print-ready version using online tools and I'd 100% encourage authors to release an interposed version so people can print and bind their own copies

Small #bookbinding update! I've been dormant since little one came in October but I'm getting ready to dust my tools off soon.

I recently purchased a new laptop case from a great #Canadian #Etsy shop that specializes in making crafts from old kimonos. The artist offers packs of scrap pieces perfect for A5 journals. Really excited to get started!

Spent the day hosting (not teaching) a workshop about braided endbands.

A wonderful structural and decorative bookbinding feature.

Worked with two new tools: split needle and fid. They strike me as two tools that would have settled to the bottom of an inherited toolbox with the subsequent generation not really knowing their use.

I'm now nostalgic for the lost tools of my horseriding great + grandfather. I'm sure they had and used these for making tack.

I've been wanting to do more sketchy collaging - like, just putting together collages without too much thought and without feeling like I have to make everything perfect - so I made a little "sketchbook" out of junk mail. Given that it's basically made out of trash, I feel like I will have an easier time experimenting and doing some loose, messy collages in it :)

Fun art-in-public thing I wanna organise someday: group #bookbinding in public.

Just get somewhere with people, set up a table or two and start working. No selling or anything, just practising the craft where people can see.

Traditional craft work as performance art, I guess.

Fascinating conservation methods. A regionally extinct and rare lichen returns to East Anglia. The magic formula for success: bookbinding glue! theguardian.com/environment/20

I already heard about the transplantation of lichens but it is extremely difficult: they need their exact pH.

alright! time for an actual #introduction!!

so, uh, I'm Sasha, "one" member of a now small
#plural system. I'm also a subsystem of two/three, but that's complicated and I don't feel like explaining it.

the other person in my head is Vale, they/she, who doesn't have an account yet because they decided to not front yesterday even though it was their turn. can't blame her though, they've been having a hard time lately.

we used to code and, as people here say, Touch Computers, but now we just want to go live in a tiny cottage in the woods and never touch anything with a CPU again. sadly that can't happen.

bodily, we're transfem and 18-21 y/o. we're getting into a few hand crafts, such as
#bookbinding, #leatherworking, and #sewing, along with maybe a few others. we also do amateur #photography, although we mostly do nature stuff and haven't really had a chance to go out in nature lately (I'm just making up excuses honestly, I'm lazy as shit)

public transit is awesome except we live in america and amtrak sucks ass compared to the trains anywhere else from what we hear.

i hope to post the funny and make people laugh on the silly webbed site transfem dot social
