New models improve predictions of snow, rock and ice avalanches

A new 3D simulation tool developed by ETH and SLF researchers now allows for significantly more accurate predictions of complex alpine mass movements, supporting alpine risk management.

The model produces the most accurate simulation of the disaster in Blatten.

"Within seconds, the avalanche seemed to swallow the camp whole, like a giant white wave crashing down. Moments later, the snow settled, and it was over. There was no trace of camp. The climbers had disappeared." —Miguel Helft for Esquire

Avalanche IV

Avalanche IV is actually the fifth and last in a series of images that I captured skiing at Snowbird in Utah.
Taken from the top of Snowbird I captured this sequence starting from the cornice blast to this concluding image.
This final image is one of my favorites from this sequence as it shows some scale to the whole event.
Here the avalanche is starting to settle.

Avalanche I

One of my passions that I have had since I was a young boy has been skiing. I learned on the small hills in the Midwest but have been skiing the Sierras and the Rocky Mountains for the last 35 years.
This was a man made avalanche as Snowbird ski resort ski patrol worked diligently to keep the mountain safe. A series of detonations at the top of a cornice set this one off.

Unusually heavy spring snow storm wreaks havoc in the Alps.

Heavy snowfall killed at least one person while another was severely injured in an avalanche as snow blanketed areas of Switzerland, Italy and France.

The unusually heavy spring storm dumped more than a metre of snow in some areas, shutting ski areas, roads, trains and schools, as authorities urged people to stay home.
