Yvonne Perkins<p>Tea drinkers take note: the ethical labelling is not doing its job - tea pickers are living below the poverty line and without adequate access to drinking water, toilets and healthy living conditions. A big issue is the brands are not paying enough for the tea leaves they buy:</p><p>“Consumers are not demanding cheap teas. It’s traded down by the brands,” he said. “So how do you move out of the vicious cycle? It’s up to the brands to make that first move.”<br><a href="https://aus.social/tags/tea" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tea</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/WorkingConditions" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WorkingConditions</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-03-05/tea-ethical-label-estates-investigation-sri-lanka/104889838" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">abc.net.au/news/2025-03-05/tea</span><span class="invisible">-ethical-label-estates-investigation-sri-lanka/104889838</span></a></p>
MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History February 3, 1910: Mary Harris "Mother" Jones addressed Milwaukee brewery workers during a two-month stint working alongside women bottle-washers while on leave from the United Mine Workers:</p><p>"Condemned to slave daily in the wash-room in wet shoes and wet clothes, surrounded with foul-mouthed, brutal foremen . . . the poor girls work in the vile smell of sour beer, lifting cases of empty and full bottles weighing from 100 to 150 pounds, in their wet shoes and rags, for they cannot buy clothes on the pittance doled out to them. . . . Rheumatism is one of the chronic ailments and is closely followed by consumption . . . An illustration of what these girls must submit to, one about to become a mother told me with tears in her eyes that every other day a depraved specimen of mankind took delight in measuring her girth &amp; passing comments." </p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/MotherJones" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MotherJones</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingconditions" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingconditions</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/women" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>women</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/exploitation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>exploitation</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/milwaukee" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>milwaukee</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/publichealth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>publichealth</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/wages" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>wages</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/wageslavery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>wageslavery</span></a></p>

MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today In Labor History April 4, 1968: James Earl Ray assassinated Martin Luther King at the Lorraine Hotel, Memphis, Tennessee. King was in Memphis to support the sanitation workers’ strike that had started in February, 1968, for better working conditions and higher pay. The strike began 2 weeks after 2 workers were crushed to death when their truck malfunctioned, intensifying the already high level of frustration and anger over working conditions and safety. King led a protest march on March 28 . Over 20,000 kids cut class to join the demonstration. Some members of the march began smashing downtown windows and looting. The cops intervened with mace, tear gas, clubs and live gunfire, killing 16-year-old Larry Paine, who had his hands in the air when he was shot. On April 3, one day before his assassination, King gave his “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/CivilRights" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CivilRights</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/MartinLutherKing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MartinLutherKing</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/racism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>racism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/assassination" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>assassination</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mlk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mlk</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/memphis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>memphis</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/union" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>union</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/strike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>strike</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/police" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>police</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/policebrutality" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>policebrutality</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/policemurder" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>policemurder</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/capitalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>capitalism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingconditions" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingconditions</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workplacesafety" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workplacesafety</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/students" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>students</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/kids" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>kids</span></a></p>
