My first attempt at a pen holder for my fountain pens made from an old piece of oak. I tried to leave on some of the wood to give it character. It is not the shape I had intended and just morphed, read got smaller, as I messed around with it. Only took an hour or so, will have another go soon. At least I have some pens out now! #fountainPens #WoodWorking #reclaimedWood

Because the diagonal braces originally connected to the boards that were holding the top together, they would be too short to reach the new top. But instead of replacing them or extending them, I had another solution: rotate the center cross piece by 90 degrees and then shorten the diagonals.

Back at home I made use of the anti-nail gun that I bought for the deck remodel. Something I didn't think I would ever use again! It did a good job of backing the nails out which I then carefully pried loose, trying to avoid damaging the wood I was keeping. #woodworking

I went full Matthias Wandel on this #woodworking project: A pine bench that I picked up from the street got its legs extended. Now it's a table! Naturally, I used the worst 2x4 I could find and Matthias Wandel's box joint jig for the joinery.

Watching some woodworking videos on YT.
1. Wow, wood is really amazing stuff.
2. These artisans are really painstaking. (Measure twice, cut once)
3. Workshop envy. So. Many. Tools. So many power tools.
4. There are a lot of bits left over. And here I thought yarn scraps were a problem!

We've been working on this project for a few months now and it looks like we'll soon come to an end. A heap of complex connections, a bit of concrete and paint later, we are nearing completion.

An diesem Projekt bauen wir nun bereits einige Monate und es sieht dannach aus das wir bald zu einem Ende kommen. Ein haufen komplexter Verbindungen bisschen Beton und Lack später sind wir kurz der Fertigstellung

Last week, I shaped the tips of nearly half of the columns using a chainsaw.
Today, I continued charring the larch wood fence posts using a propane burner. This is a variation of the traditional Shou Sugi Ban technique (Japanese: 焼杉), in which the wood surface is carbonized to enhance durability, weather resistance, and protection against fungal decay.

I opted for a gas burner instead of an open fire, as it allows for more even and controlled charring. The temperature ranged between approximately 1200°C and 1600°C. Each column took about 10–15 minutes. I kept the flame constantly moving to avoid scorching any single spot and to achieve a consistent, shallow burn across the surface. If the wood starts to crack or the char flakes off easily, it’s gone too far.

I'm quite satisfied with the results.
From my experience, durability is best when the surface of the heartwood is smooth and evenly charred. I’m convinced that charring larch wood without the sapwood results in greater resistance compared to burning the entire piece with the sapwood intact. Carefully brushing the posts with a brass brush afterward removes loose burned particles and smooths the surface. A second round of careful charring after brushing can further deepen the carbon layer.
