Doku: The Cure – Disintegration

Unter dem Titel „Disintegration – Ein Album. Eine Band. Eine Generation.“ findet ihr in der MDR-Mediathek noch bis 04.09.2025 eine Dokumentation aus dem letzten Jahr über eines der herausragenden Alben von The Cure.

Robert Smith ist ein so außergewöhnlich guter Songwriter und „Disintegration“ ist eines seiner Meisterwerke. Die Akkordfolgen sind eher einfach, doch die Arrangements sind so unglaublich schön und machen den Reiz der Kompositionen aus. Ich liebe dieses Album, es hat einfach so viel zu bieten, unter anderem die Hits „Pictures Of You“, „Lovesong“ und „Lullaby“, das als Single 25 Wochen in den deutschen Charts war und bis auf Platz 3 hochstieg. Mein Favorit ist darüber hinaus der Opener „Plainsong“, das sich so komplex aufbaut, dass Robert erst nach 2:37 Minuten mit dem Gesang beginnt. Meine persönliche Geschichte dazu ist, dass ich kurz nach der Veröffentlichung von „Disintegration“ das erste Mal The Cure live sah, am 05. Mai 1989 in der Alsterdorfer Sporthalle in Hamburg. Auch dieses Konzert begann mit „Plainsong“ und endete mit „Homesick“ und „Untitled“, so wie das Album.

Doch zurück zur Doku. Sie beschreibt den Werdegang der Band und läßt auch Fans aus der damaligen DDR ihre Erfahrungen mit The Cure beschreiben, schließlich erschien „Disintegration“ im Wendejahr 1989. Außerdem kommen einige Weggefährten zu Wort. Eine schöne Hommage an die wohl größte Gothic-Bands aller Zeiten.

A song about how it was socially unacceptable for men to get all weepy when they've had good sex, and how this tends to drive away some weak partners. Robert Smith gives his usual impression of a bird taking off.

#TheCure had evolved steadily since their debut,Three Imaginary Boys, by the time they produced this atmospheric proto-#goth release.

I can't help but hear these lyrics as almost comically stereotypically goth-dreary now - the perspective of maturity, or world-weary cynicism? -
but they do reflect lead and driving force #RobertSmith's self awareness about the substances he and his bandmates were reputed to be indulging in at the time, and when I let go and sink into the music, yeah, it still works.

I have an unusual relationship with The Cure. A handful of their songs have metaphorically drilled chips right into my brain.

The main one would be Lullaby which … I … possibly can’t explain.

But right now I’m listening to “Why Can’t I Be You?” which is a tonally happy song, but also 10 yr old me registered a deeper understanding.
