The immortal line by Margaret #Thatcher:
There is no such thing as #society.

The Iron Lady's Hallmark crad for Late Stage Capitalism. A slogan so bleak it makes Hobbes sound like Mister Rogers.

She envisioned us as pathetic little atomized consumers, free falling through history, bumping into each other only to exchange currency or germs. If we're lucky we die alone due to climate change, clutching our reusable tote bag, whispering "at least I offset my flight to Ibiza."

"Shifty is Curtis at his most atmospheric, even surrealist. Getting lost in his late-capitalist video collages can feel like a shot to the heart, which is one way of saying his work often resembles the wild detours of Guy Debord and his Dada forebears. While the occasional titles describe what is happening, they feel more like bookends than breadcrumbs.
(...)
His new five-part documentary is a kind of fairy-tale fever dream of capitalist realism, whose broad contours will be familiar to readers of Mark Fisher and Jacobin. The story begins with the earthquake of Thatcherism. We watch as the Iron Lady attempts to conjure national cohesion from a make-believe version of Britain’s imperial past, even as she elevates self-interest and private ambition to the level of civic virtue. What follows is a slow-motion fragmentation: scandals metastasize into generalized social paranoia, sensationalist media narratives erode institutional trust, and liberal elites, feeling betrayed by the newly Tory-voting working classes, retreat into the cultural capital of biennales, book prizes, and conceptual art. Industrial infrastructure is sold off for pennies on the pound as the government hands the reins of interest rates to unelected bankers. Unemployment, skinheads, check-cashing stores, and Netto discount supermarkets sprout like wild thyme across the English heather. Politicians end up believing the worst about themselves and begin abdicating responsibility. A cash-strapped Gordon Brown attempts early versions of public-private partnerships, indebting the government to private finance for the very services it had only just recently provided. In the background are the twin engines of finance and technology: unaccountable, placeless, and entirely prepared to occupy the vacuum left by political withdrawal."

jacobin.comIn Shifty, Adam Curtis Charts the UK’s UnravelingDirector Adam Curtis’s latest BBC docuseries, Shifty, follows Britain’s late 20th-century retreat into make-believe as managed decline tears everything apart. It’s the familiar Curtis aesthetic, but still as powerful and haunting as ever.

@Veza85UE @ChrisMayLA6 equality goes way way beyond poverty. Also people who are objectively well off can worry about their future prospects and that of their children, and become susceptible for populist rhetoric.

Especially when considering housing cost, inequality has risen dramatically starting with #Thatcher / #Reagan.

As the 50s/60s with high taxes for the rich has shown, equality leads to tremendous economic growth. #TrickleDown fails in reality.

Today in Labor History May 30, 1381: Tax collector John Bampton sparked the Peasants’ Revolt in Brentwood, Essex. The mass uprising, also known as Wat Tyler’s Rebellion, or the Great Rising, began because of attempts to collect a poll tax. However, tensions were already high because of the economic misery and hunger caused by the Black Death pandemic of the 1340s, and the Hundred Years’ War. During the uprising, rebels burned public records and freed prisoners. King Richard II, 14 years old, hid in the Tower of London. Rebels entered the Tower and killed the Lord Chancellor and the Lord High Treasurer, but not the king. It took nearly six months for the authorities to suppress the Peasants’ Revolt. They slaughtered over 1,400 rebels. Roughly 600 years later, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher tried again to impose a poll tax on Britain’s working class. It also sparked a revolt which brought an end both to the tax and Thatcher’s regime. Billy Bragg references Thatcher’s poll tax in his song, All You Fascists.

#thatcher #neoliberalisme #pensioen #aandelen

Day 20 💰💰🏭🏦🛢️☢️🕍⛪🙏🔥

“spin-off of the US-based #CPAC – short for Conservative Political Action Conference – the #Sydney-based outfit described itself as a “values-based” organisation that “espouses the best of #Howard, #Reagan and #Thatcher while exploring new ideas and themes for the coming generations”.

Guests at the August event included #OneNation senator Pauline Hanson, Michelle Pearse, the CEO of the #AustralianChristianLobby, and broadcaster and soon-to-be alleged sex offender, #AlanJones.

Overseas talent included Jay Aeba, chairman of the Japanese Conservative Union and Heather Wilson, mother of six and co-founder of #GiveSendGo, a #Christian #crowdfunding network which has helped raise money for #NeoNazis and #AntiVaxxers

“Then, in 2018, investment banker and long-time #ClimateConspiracist Maurice Newman, billionaire storage king Sam Kennard, and David Adler, of the #FarRight Australian Jewish Association (AJA), got together to form #AdvanceAustralia. Money was no problem: #HedgeFund manager and #Liberal Party donor Simon Fenwick tipped in $190,000; a further $400,000 came from Sydney #Establishment couple Rodney and Judith O’Neil, and the Taylor #winemaking family.

Advance pitched itself as a champion of the #SilentMajority#HowardsBattlers 2.0. But its real concerns were better expressed by another early backer, #hotelier James Power, who was then engaged in a battle to prevent women from becoming members of #Brisbane’s #Tattersall’s Club.”

If you noticed a darker turn to the election this week, here’s a good explanation of the WHY and HOW. Also I see Tony 🧅 got a new job.
