State Sen. Paul Bettencourt emphasizes that Senate Bill 38, passed by the upper chamber on Thursday, is necessary to make it easier for courts to remove squatters. But Democrats and tenants’ advocates say it would undermine due process.

When @ProPublica journalist Alec MacGillis first met lawyer Andrew Rabinowitz, the latter was representing a property management company owned by the Kushner family. McGillis was writing an article about the company’s aggressive approach to tenants. Eight years later, Rabinowitz is defending beleaguered tenants against their landlords. What happened?

Via StayHousedLA: If you are unable to pay your rent in April, you must notify your landlord by April 7th.

You can get a letter to give landlord, as well as sign up for tenants rights workshops in the link below

I’m going to call them on Monday because I’m real upset about this I don’t understand why they removed the tenant rights pamphlet from this page.

And they also had one for landlords, I enjoyed reading that one so I could see what tips and tricks they could use against you.

But all the tenants rights information is gone from this page and there’s no reason to take it down and I’m mad about it.

I wrote this article about a rent strike that started in two Kansas City apartment complexes, and organizers are working to spread this campaign to buildings across multiple US states.

The purpose is not just to fix things at the building level; this ambitious campaign is strategically targeting buildings strikes in a way that aims to force the the hand of a federal regulator, the FHFA, to lock in tenant protections.

Shelterforce · Could This Rolling Rent Strike Make the Feds Protect Tenants? With a rent strike, organizers aim to catalyze a crisis to pressure a major federal housing regulator to lock in tenant protections.

Q: Should tenants take part of "Residents Associations," or should those only include owner/occupiers and landlords?

A: Yes, they should! They RESIDE in the area, don't they? Furthermore, many tenants take more interest in their neighbourhood and are more proactive than owners.

We live nearly a decade in the same place, go to public community meetings, we care about improving our area but cannot be members?

Did you know that in New York State, tenants can now sue their landlords in summary proceedings even without an attorney, if landlords refuse to maintain properties in compliance with the warranty of habitability?

I wrote this piece for Shelterforce and interviewed some local tenants who successfully sued their landlord using this new law, although they did have pro bono legal representation from #Cornell's Tenants Rights practicum.

Shelterforce · They Had No Heat for Four Months. A New Law Let Them Sue.In New York state, tenants can now take landlords to court directly to force repairs and get damages. Here's how one of the first tests of the new law worked.

JOURNALIST REQUEST:
if you've been asked for more than 2 month's rent *total* before moving into a rental unit in #NewYork State, please DM me.

It is illegal to ask for first, last, and security in New York--as it has been for four years.

So if anyone has been asked for first + last + security after 2019 in #NY State, please get in touch.

I'm putting together an investigative piece for the housing publication Shelterforce on how prevalent this practice is.
