There's more to life than getting things done.
You literally have to earn their respect, and every semester they try to pull some weird shenanigans. Not to mention that usually half the class hates the other half (the ones who worked hard to get to medical school vs the nepo-babies who don't care, they'll inherit dad's clinic sooner or later).
This semester? They were just the nicest medical students I have taught. Saying goodbye to them actually made me sad, when usually 15 weeks of them is more than enough.
That's all.
Hah. In the meetup discord I run some of the students show up too, including those that still have a semester with me.

I've been trying to go back to my blog recently.
I've made some changes and I've decided on a new direction.

What Fryer summer holiday would be complete without a reflective audio podcast?! Check out our latest episode (Ep 35) of Wes and Shelly Share: “Teton Adventures and Summer Camp Highlights!”
What would be your favorite slogan on a t-shirt to wear at school as a teacher? (upper secondary)
"Go prompt yourself" (ok, maybe a little harsh )
"Writing is thinking - Chat responsibly"
"Think before you chat"
"Who writes your identity?"
Strong claim from a recent article on using AI to evaluate teaching: "AI evaluation removes human bias in teaching assessment" https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2666920X25000888
Sort of ironically, I asked AI to evaluate this claim. Gemini 2.5: this is an overstatement, but AI may serve as a "complementary component within a comprehensive, multi-method evaluation framework." https://docs.google.com/document/d/1V0PiO97GgCtLrqnhLlfo1PS7U5sD4kLbl04oPM7Z4aY/edit?usp=sharing
ChatGPT 4.1: The claim is "misleading in its absoluteness" https://drive.google.com/file/d/1p_69vnJnxYyGxGrEMD1BYwahbDGzqMJz/view?usp=sharing

I just don't understand some students. In my writing class, there's a weekly assignment to do, and if they don't have a passing grade to this particular section of the class, they fail the entire class, no discussion to be had.
One student has done the assignment four times out of 13 so far (only one left). I've told him for weeks that he's in serious danger of failing and... He keeps on not doing the assignment but keeps on coming to class. Does he hope I forgot my class rules?
Reading Geoffrey Cohen on belonging. Weird reading a book on diversity and inclusion when it's being demonized and dismantled all around us in real time but. I'm finding all kinds of ways to help my students (and help them help each other) feel at home here and it's giving me hope for holding out for the next three years.
This is my first #introduction, as I’ve just created my account on Mastodon.
I’m Hawan (she/her), an #artist who has been #painting and #teaching for decades in #SouthKorea.
I use a very manual approach to creating my works, but exploring new things, including social networks, is always exciting.
Lately I’ve been enjoying listening to audiobooks about historical events or figures, and watching detective thrillers. I hope I can settle in here and connect with new people and surroundings.
@garyackerman When I was a student, my life was occasionally a storm of chaos. Usually due to forces beyond by control. Class and family of origin issues can turn on hard mode even for white males. Everyone has invisible struggles.
I got lots of second chances. Anybody who says they didn't is in the grip of an inhuman ideology.
Ask, and ye shall receive.
It costs very little to be kind.

AI and a Return to Rhetoric
As many schools struggle with how to handle the emergence of "AI" (actually LLMs), it may be time to look to the past to ensure our educational future.

#Math for #biologists: I am looking for a textbook or online material that could be used as a basis of a course for undergrad biology students. The problem is that many biologists are mathphobic & need strong motivation (#teaching based on biological applications). Recommendations welcome!
Section 28 is back Straights, all thanks to Labour.
This is why I will never feel 'British', your state hates me and my Queer breathern, always will.
Are you going to change it or just look the other way?
I know the answer sadly, not enough of a fuss will be made, not enough voices will be heard, we just don't matter as much, that girl was been lied to when she was told this was a land of 'tolerance'
Sam, I love you when you are just trying to learn about the world. You, taking lessons in multiplication tables, here you take a trip on the Thames just to learn about ships.
I know that most of these you do to be better at your job and impress the King. But you do want to learn. I am a teacher and I love you for it.
