Stefano Marinelli<p>This morning, once again, I come across an interesting project. I head over to GitHub to take a look.</p><p>I read that the only supported way to use the project is via Docker because "providing installation instructions, given the underlying complexity, would be impossible." Not a fan of that, but okay, I start to understand… So, as I often do, I decide to open the Dockerfile (there’s no Compose). First line:</p><p>FROM alpine:3.14 AS base</p><p>No, your project isn’t "just" complex. It’s running on an outdated and potentially insecure base. And that’s a much bigger problem. It probably means it’s such a mess that updating it is impossible.</p><p>I close the GitHub page and move on with my life. 😆</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/SysAdmin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SysAdmin</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/SysAdminLife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SysAdminLife</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/IT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>IT</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/tags/Docker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Docker</span></a></p>
Mauricio Teixeira 🇺🇸🇧🇷<p>Suddenly I realized: there was a time when a lot of open source projects were using Slack to chat, but recently I have seen a spike in new projects using Discord instead. Considering that before Slack it was IRC, I wonder if it's a generational thing, rather than a tooling problem.<br><a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/OpenSource" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenSource</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/SysAdminLife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SysAdminLife</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/HomeLab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HomeLab</span></a></p>
Mauricio Teixeira 🇺🇸🇧🇷<p>Okay, that (kind of) settles it! 40% of the voters said I should keep writing about running things with Docker Compose in my blog, so that's what I'm gonna do.</p><p>However a close 36% said they also wanted me to add Podman + SystemD as an alternative. I will take feedback that into consideration, and think about how I can incorporate them, even if just a little bit (no promises though).</p><p>And what did I learn through the course of pondering/researching about this subject? Some people just want to use their home lab to self-host stuff, and learn about the stuff they host, not necessarily spend time or learn about the *infrastructure* behind the home lab, or the multiple ways to run it as similar as possible to a production environment (either with less/savaged hardware, or not caring about redundancy/HA).</p><p>Those were some very enlightening couple of days. Let's see how I can better make use of this research to tailor the way I share my experiences.</p><p>Thanks all who voted/commented! (and all the random posts I read to complement my data)</p><p><a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/HomeLab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HomeLab</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/SelfHosted" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SelfHosted</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/SysAdminLife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SysAdminLife</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Forgejo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Forgejo</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://hachyderm.io/@badnetmask/113997118763827937" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">hachyderm.io/@badnetmask/11399</span><span class="invisible">7118763827937</span></a></p>

Mauricio Teixeira 🇺🇸🇧🇷<p>New blog post! Come figure out how I have configured my Forgejo runners to build my container images on my Raspberry Pi, totally self-hosted and private. I went crazy and run Docker in Docker in Docker in ... (you got the idea). There is also a bonus LXC container with Proxmox and a sprinkle of Ansible. This was a fun experiment, and I hope you enjoy it!</p><p><a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/HomeLab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HomeLab</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/SelfHosted" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SelfHosted</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Forgejo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Forgejo</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/RaspberryPi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RaspberryPi</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Docker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Docker</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Proxmox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Proxmox</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/SysAdminLife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SysAdminLife</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Blog" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Blog</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mteixeira.wordpress.com/2025/02/03/my-self-hosted-forgejo-runner-setup/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">mteixeira.wordpress.com/2025/0</span><span class="invisible">2/03/my-self-hosted-forgejo-runner-setup/</span></a></p>
Mauricio Teixeira 🇺🇸🇧🇷<p>Enough mucking around with these Forgejo runners. I have a working solution, which is not the best, but it's functional, and is what I need to finish the blog post. At some point in the future I can think about version 2.0, with a better container image (or my own, who knows).</p><p><a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/HomeLab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HomeLab</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Forgejo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Forgejo</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/SysAdminLife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SysAdminLife</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Proxmox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Proxmox</span></a></p>
Mauricio Teixeira 🇺🇸🇧🇷<p>Okay, here's something that is killing my Forgejo runner experiment: I need the perfect container image. The ones I have tried so far are missing one thing or another, and it's taking me a while to deal with that.</p><p>So, instead of trying to build my own image, let me ask the hive mind if anyone knows of a single *reliable* container image that has all of the following *already* installed: Python, NodeJS and Docker CE (or Podman).</p><p>And no, I'm not looking for a container image built buy a random guy for their own personal use. That guy could be me. I really want something that is supported as part of a larger project.</p><p>My sanity thanks you.</p><p><a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/HomeLab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HomeLab</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Forgejo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Forgejo</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/SysAdminLife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SysAdminLife</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/SelfHosted" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SelfHosted</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Docker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Docker</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Podman" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Podman</span></a></p>
Mauricio Teixeira 🇺🇸🇧🇷<p>Ugh! I created a complication for my own self.</p><p>While writing a blog post about my findings related to Forgejo runner on a Raspberry Pi, I realized that I also needed a runner to build x86 (amd64) images. So now I am adding a lot more steps to my setup (still debating between LXC or KVM on Proxmox).</p><p>The blog post has been severely delayed.</p><p><a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/HomeLab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HomeLab</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Forgejo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Forgejo</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/SysAdminLife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SysAdminLife</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Proxmox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Proxmox</span></a></p>
Mauricio Teixeira 🇺🇸🇧🇷<p>Fun! While writing a blog post about my findings related to Forgejo runner and Docker-in-Docker, I realized I made a few mistakes, and was able to fix them.</p><p>So that proves that old saying: the best way to learn, is to teach.</p><p><a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/HomeLab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HomeLab</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Forgejo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Forgejo</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/SysAdminLife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SysAdminLife</span></a></p>
Mauricio Teixeira 🇺🇸🇧🇷<p>Sometimes we do complex stuff just for the sake of learning, and that's the essence of why we have home labs.</p><p>I built a Fedora container image (for an Ansible execution environment), from inside an Ubuntu container, that is running inside another Ubuntu container (Forgejo runner), while all of them were using the same underlying Docker-in-Docker, running from a Docker Compose (where Forgejo and the Runner also are), on a Debian base OS, on a Raspberry Pi.</p><p>Did I need to do that? Absolutely not. Did I like doing it? Obviously yes!</p><p>Now I just need to find the time and the head space to write a blog post about it. 😄 </p><p><a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/HomeLab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HomeLab</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Forgejo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Forgejo</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Ansible" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Ansible</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/RaspberryPi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RaspberryPi</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/SysAdminLife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SysAdminLife</span></a></p>
