The Guardian · Australian authorities need more access to encrypted messages, rightwing extremism inquiry saysBy Josh Butler

Wow! This interview between @agreenberg and @Mer__edith is gold. On #Signal, #SurveillanceTech, the role of #NonProfit|s and #capital. And #AI and drones. And the business model of #discrimination by AI.

One of the many memorable statements:
«The short answer here is that AI is a product of the mass surveillance business model in its current form. It is not a separate technological phenomenon.»

I feel like the panic about tiktok stealing personal data is largely racist?

Because those who panic about it rarely mention anything about Googoe/Amazon/Facebook/Microsoft etc doing the same..

Like, sure.. tiktok steals data. Personal information of users has been one of the most profitable commodities for sale for a number of years now.

But they're all doing it, and if you're only protecting yourself against Big Bad China, you might want to take a moment to ask yourself why that actually is.

[white men need not comment, thanks]

@Mer__edith is an extraordinarily clear commentator on the #AI hype and why it is happening right now (not "AI", which is old, but the hype, and who is interested in giving us all the impression that we're at some kind of "pivotal moment" in history). She also tied AI to the massive computational growth connected to the advertisement-surveillance profit model.
