Its argued even other #shellfish might have that problem, no for bivalves.
2) Unlike all other meat they have a negative pollution footprint and a near neutral carbon footprint on par with plants. If farmed properly, you literally just have to seed them, drop a line with cages into the ocean, then come back in a while and pull them up. They absorb both pollutants and CO2 into their shells and sequester it. When eating bivalves it feels like you are throwing away so much, but you are just sequestering carbon and toxins.
3) Very densely nutritious meaning you eat less plants/less water use/less disruption of the land killing off tons of animals that can suffer to plow fields.

There are only 2 downsides.
1)many find them gross. I hate oysters, LOVE scallops, learned I like hard shelled clams, tolerate soft shelled clams and enjoy blue mussels, but don't like some others. Some are an acquired taste. Others need to be prepared right, such as soaking in salt brine, learned that the hard way with canned clams.
2) Many are paranoid because they filter toxins. I get this completely. Its scary knowing so many filtering toxins but by all accounts they are perfectly safe and just use it to build their shells into safe stable forms of those chemicals. Many are being used to purify long term toxic waterways and build reefs resistant to climate change flooding.

This very overlooked meat is the one exception to the suffering rule vegans have, and is like the plant version of meat. Been trying to put more of it into my diet to replace other meats as much as I can besides mycoproteins like Quorn. I am surprised scientists haven't started breeding shellfish trying to use chicken or cow DNA as a form of lab grown meant but actually good for the planet.

Mostly clams and cockles, but also mussels and barnacles populations are decreasing, shellfishers report.

This is caused by climate change and increased temperatures in the Atlantic ocean. Pollution may be also affecting the habitat, along other natural factors like heavy rains, low salinity and wind direction.

This people are crying for help as their way of living is slowly getting unsustainable. They can't make enough money with their jobs and they're suffering in first person the changes in the ecosystem.

I'll leave here a link to a digital news page from 2022 talking about the matter in English.

https://inspain.news/galician-fishermen-sound-the-alarm-less-and-less-seafood/

#climatechange #climatecrisis #ocean #ecosystem #shellfish #nature #galicia #sosmarisqueo
