Georgiana Brummell<p>Would anyone be able to help me contact Larry Skutchan, or could someone please pass a question on to him? I don't wish to disturb him, especially now that he is retired. Several years ago, I recall asking him about ASAP and if I could obtain a full version of it. He told me that he no longer had it, but that the demonstration was fully functional, with only some reminders to buy the product. I must assume that, since he lost the program, he also lost the source code. But if I knew the language in which it was written, I could find a programmer to rewrite the code, updating it to add support for software synthesizers, various modern things, and even create new set files for updated and current programs. But naturally, I need his permission to do so, since it is not open source and I don't want to get in any sort of legal trouble. While Provox is, indeed, open source, ASAP is one of the most advanced and flexible DOS screen readers, and I would like to use it in my project to make FreeDOS and its programs more accessible.</p><p><a href="https://someplace.social/tags/accessibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>accessibility</span></a> <a href="https://someplace.social/tags/APH" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>APH</span></a> <a href="https://someplace.social/tags/ASAP" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ASAP</span></a> <a href="https://someplace.social/tags/blind" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>blind</span></a> <a href="https://someplace.social/tags/DOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DOS</span></a> <a href="https://someplace.social/tags/FreeDOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FreeDOS</span></a> <a href="https://someplace.social/tags/programming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>programming</span></a> <a href="https://someplace.social/tags/ScreenReader" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ScreenReader</span></a> <a href="https://someplace.social/tags/ScreenReader" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ScreenReader</span></a> <a href="https://someplace.social/tags/SpeechSynthesis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SpeechSynthesis</span></a> <a href="https://someplace.social/tags/technology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>technology</span></a></p>
Georgiana Brummell<p>I found another Linux distribution that looked interesting. It's called Mageia. The only versions of Linux I have ever been able to get to work are Vinux, Sonar, Debian, and possibly Trisquel, but I don't remember the last one well. Only the first two were completely usable for me, though Debian may have been if I had more patience with it. Mageia is supposed to be easier to use than Debian and has some sort of updating centre that negates the use of the commandline. I love the DOS commandline but have very little patience with the Linux one. It is also small, light, and has a 32-bit version. I downloaded the full 32-bit version to try in a VmWare virtual machine, with the hopes of installing Mate as the desktop, since that's supposed to be the most like Windows and easy to use. I created the machine and started it. I had to use NVDA's ocr, but I learned that it was at a language screen. Neither alt+super+s nor alt+f2 and typing Orca would start Orca, rendering the whole thing useless, as with so many versions of Linux. They have a live version of Gnome, but I heard that can be very confusing to use with Orca and is visual. It also only comes in a 64-bit version, and I prefer my systems to use as little memory and power as possible. I am using a Toughpad FZ 1 MK3 with 8gb of ram, which works well with my XP and 7 machines, both 32-bit and 64-bit, but I know very little about Linux. I was also hoping that, if I found a good version, I could install it on an older machine. Does anyone have any experience with this version of Linux or Gnome versus Mate, If it helps, I love Windows XP and 7 and hate 11, ribbons, and whatever other nonsense they're doing now. I like simplicity and things that make sense.</p><p><a href="https://someplace.social/tags/accessibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>accessibility</span></a> <a href="https://someplace.social/tags/blind" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>blind</span></a> <a href="https://someplace.social/tags/Gnome" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Gnome</span></a> <a href="https://someplace.social/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> <a href="https://someplace.social/tags/Mageia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mageia</span></a> <a href="https://someplace.social/tags/Mate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mate</span></a> <a href="https://someplace.social/tags/Orca" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Orca</span></a> <a href="https://someplace.social/tags/ScreenReader" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ScreenReader</span></a> <a href="https://someplace.social/tags/technology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>technology</span></a></p>

Taylor Arndt<p>When I post videos using my screen reader, many think it’s just a “talking robot.” In reality, it’s how blind and low vision people access computers, smartphones, and the internet. That voice represents independence and equal access. Without it, millions would be excluded. I challenge you to share this with your friends and networks—let’s spread awareness together.<br><a href="https://techopolis.social/tags/Accessibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Accessibility</span></a> <a href="https://techopolis.social/tags/Inclusion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Inclusion</span></a> <a href="https://techopolis.social/tags/ScreenReader" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ScreenReader</span></a> <a href="https://techopolis.social/tags/AssistiveTechnology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AssistiveTechnology</span></a> <a href="https://techopolis.social/tags/DigitalAccessibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DigitalAccessibility</span></a></p>

PurpleJillybeansThinking about plaintext <a href="https://blog.n8fq.org/social?t=accessibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#accessibility</a>...<br><br>I recently set up <a href="https://blog.n8fq.org/social?t=gopherprotocol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#GopherProtocol</a> on my retro server. Gopher is, for the most part, a strictly plaintext medium, which one would assume is great for accessibility. It is, however, common to liven things up a bit with a little ASCII art (well, technically ISO 8859-1 art, or ANSI, or UTF-8...) and I'm wondering just how hard that is on <a href="https://blog.n8fq.org/social?t=screenreader" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#ScreenReader</a> users. I myself have a little figlet header on my root menu.<br><br>A question for those affected: is decorative text a serious <a href="https://blog.n8fq.org/social?t=a11y" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#a11y</a> barrier?<br>
