FACT : 100 years ago a Tennessee grand jury indicted science teacher John Scopes for violating the state’s law making it a crime “to teach any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation of man as taught in the Bible, and to teach instead that man has descended from a lower order of animals."

History repeats itself.

This is an example of what is being eliminated as Republicans in Washington, DC and this administration make catastrophic cuts to scientific research (among other things) to provide tax cuts to and curry favor with billionaires:

So much amazing research out there looking to find cures for awful diseases. So many scientific researchers spending their lives working to advance science.

So much of it now threatened by the outrageous grift and backward looking, hypocritical, lying sanctimonious crooks and dolts in charge in Washington, DC right now. Absolute bums.

Can read this essay as an optimist or a pessimist. Two things are clear:
1. The trump administration does not have the public's best interests in mind. Ever;
2. #Resist the efforts to tear down and turn back all of the progress in human development — that includes science and social well-being (equality and equity...), etc. — that has come before.

The New York Times · Opinion | We Found a Work Around to Trump Defunding ScienceBy Phillip Levin

The pretense for the U.S. attorney's letter is ridiculous. "Viewpoint diversity?" What next, demands to give antivax conspiracy theorists, Creationists and Flat Earthers equal time? We are moving from peer review to clown demands, and it really is not funny. The U.S. is trapped in an unbelievable comic farce and a cruel, horrific tragedy at the same time. What a nightmare.

NBC News · U.S. attorney demands scientific journal explain how it ensures 'viewpoint diversity'By Evan Bush

“Science is increasingly—intentionally—being pushed out of the realm of what you trust and into the realm of the unfamiliar. Scientists must resist this push. We owe this to society—to one another”

I heard Annihilation was about grief or relationships. I'm interested af in Scavenger's Reign.

I feel like we have a rough indentation / substructure of how we will process things from birth, but that every event thereon will shape it further.

As well, we know ourselves in reference to others: "I'm like A, not like B, but most like C. What lies beyond C? I might see myself reflected best over there."

"Rules do not exist to bind you; they exist so you may know your freedoms."
Parameters outline a given environment within which to experiment and explore. It's one antidote to Blank Page Syndrome, for example.

I have to disagree entirely about personifying the automated house in There Will Come Soft Rains (fantastic name), but otherwise yes. This is exactly my understanding.

It's also a good description of why I feel so confused by others.
People tend to feel more secure (than I do) in their identities as individuals, group members, and (neurotypical / neurodefault / neurorigid) humans.

Despite the world's imperfections, science and tech used to be a wealth of opportunities, innovation and possibilities.
Since this administration's assault on truth, scientific research has really suffered, especially in the U.S. Likewise, breakthroughs and the progress led by American science have experienced incalculable setbacks. The whole world suffers. Not much good news here these days —
