I have a 2006 MacBook 1,1 that originally came with OS X 10.4. I'd like to install the original OS on it, however I don't have any of the original CDs.

I've *acquired* (ahem) an ISO of 10.4.5 from archive.org (archive.org/search?query=os+x+) and naively dd'ed it to a USB stick. (making sure I got the intel version)

It starts booting but then displays the circle with a diagonal line through it symbol and doesn't go any further.

So, how would I go about restoring this computer to its original OS? It's currently running 10.6.8, and there's no recovery partition on the disk.

One of the allures of #retro is the sense of disconnect. Removing distractions by using technology that predates the Internet — the Web, at least. 🔌

But you didn't have the entire game catalog of who knows how many systems readily available back then. You had just a few games and you focused on those.

Today, those other games out there just waiting to be played are itself a powerful distraction. It's hard to stay focused, but great when it happens. 🧘‍♂️

Dithering Session 001

I just ran across this fantastic article that I think really captures the spirit and joy of early home computing, although I came along just a little too late to have experienced it:

I was introduced to this in a post by @scruss on retrocomputingforum.com, at retrocomputingforum.com/t/rema in a super interesting thread started by @EdS on the 2025 BASIC 10-liners competition, gkanold.wixsite.com/homeputeri.

#retrocomputing is alive and remains fascinating!

After what feels like 2000 years I have finally got myself an egg whisk style keycap puller so I can replace the left arrow key on my C64C with the proper one thanks to @mike. I assume the left arrow key it had is from an Aldi C64 as it has the same style as the breadbin keyboard on my other C64. Not sure how it got on my C64C originally, maybe someone at the Commodore factory wasn't paying attention
